    Tarp question

I currently own 2 tarps. I have the stock one that came with the Hennessy backpacker which is super light but tiny. I also have the Hennessy hex 70d, which is a great size but super bulky and heavy...

Is the weight and packed size of the hex the norm for that size of a tarp? or do some of the cottage vendors make tarps that are near the size of the hex but still pack small and decent light weight?

The Hennessy hex is polyurethane (PU) coated nylon. The base nylon is 1.9 oz/sy weight before the coating which adds about another ounce. So your tarp weighs somewhat shy of 3 oz/sy.

A backpacker's tarp is made of silicone impregnated nylon (silnylon or sil) which is 30D fabric weighing 1.1 oz/sy for the base fabric plus 0.3 oz/sy for the silicone treatment for a total of 1.4 oz/sy maximum.

So, you can see that a 30D silnylon tarp will weigh less than half of your hex tarp for the same size tarp. Pack volume will also be about half.

That sounds awesome but when i look at hennessy's website it says my current setup weighs 23 oz and packes to 3.5" x 11". The same tarp in the 30d material weighs 18.6oz and packs to 3" x 10", that doesnt seem like that much of a difference to me...

If i could get a tarp to be as big as my hex and still be able to pack it in my hammock bag that would be unbelievable, but currently the pack for my hex tarp is bigger then that of my backpacker hammock + stock tarp. That just seems silly.

Also on the sizes... That may just be the size of the bags... They can be stuffed hard in that bag or just loosely stuffed but be in the same bag... Someone who owns one in the original bag would be able to tell you better... But usually factory numbers are wrong/off real world numbers...
