If you are willing to carry fleece this is your cure-all...make yourself a fairly easy uq out of fleece in a similar fashion to a regular uq. Either that or find a way to suspend half of your blanket under the hammock while the other part wraps over you...kind of like a fleece peapod of sorts...you are giving me ideas...ARRRGH! lol

Being a tropical climate camper, I can sympathize with your issue. Even though I see no lower teperature than about 75, I can understand why keeping warm is a concern. A low of 50 is a lot different than the lows you are expecting.

I personally think that if you are seeing at a worst of 50 degrees, you will be perfectly fine with laying on your fleece blanket and a pad of some kind. that would be good to a relatively lower temp. I personally think it's a little overkill, but good luck with your decision.

    I live in Central Florida.

I often nap in my back porch hammock. Even on days when temps are in the mid 70's, after a few minutes. I can feel a chill on my bottom side. It amazes me.

Note: I am a cold sleeper and like a lot of blankets in any situation.

I would not go without at least a PLUQ.

My second hike, I played the "average low game" and carried a 50 degree bag.Second night 30 degrees.

Weather man doesn't deal in mean variation of the norm figures. Do not trust the weatherman.

Cheers guys - I think I will pack my pad and buy a blanket on the road somewhere if I need it...

To stay cheap a pad and PLUQ will do fine with a decent bag.

We keep seeing/hearing that hammocks are widely used in Vietnam and other parts of Asia. I'd be interested if you could report on how the locals deal with lower temperatures. Maybe there's a lesson there?

Those temps aren't so low that you'd need a whole lot of insulation if you are a warm sleeper. Going with something cheap that won't compress will likely be enough, i'd think.

From what I've seen in Thailand some just use a wrap around, fully clothed and crawl into the hammock.

I know that is what I do with a poncho liner in the tropics (if needed).

Counting down, will keep you posted on how the locals do it somewhere at the end of this year....

i took off for the ozark trail one weekend after working all week outside in really hot weather.when it got to camp after a long hike i thought this will be great and climbed in my hammock.it got down to 59 degrees the first night ,i had no under insulation just my 20 degree bag.i tossed and turned from my back till it froze then turned over on my stomack to warm the buns.this continual all night process really lowered my core body temp.i couldnt get a breakfast fire going quick enough, and was colder than i have been in the thirties with under quilt or pad.be comfortable and take someting for under you.imho
