    Car sun shade as insulator...s

So I have an sun shade in my car that is really wanting to be cut apart. I had an idea to use it as insulation for my feet to go along with a 1/2 under quilt or make some covers for my nalgene's to keep them from freezing... or insulation around my foster's pot... after it's off the stove of course...

Has any one ever done this and how did it work out for you?

I just cut one up one up and made a cozy for one of my pots. I'm thinking of using some of it to keep my feet warm when I sleep. There's a video on sgt. rocks forum covering this same question or maybe it was you tube. Anyway Sgt Rock covers the subject very well.

keeping a bit of it for under your feet sounds like a good idea. I tried one as bottom insulation and wound up almost doing the backstroke in the morning I sweated so much during the night. Thank God it was warm in the morning or I would have been pretty cold when I got up.

I relied on a thin one when temperatures dropped suddenly and I only had a sleeping bag. It did a surprisingly good job and I didn't find that I had any significant condensation problems. I figure it's light and compact, so I don't mind packing it just in case.

I've used them twice. First time, I sweated and got cold. The second time it worked great. I think the colder it gets, the better it works (i.e. the less you sweat).

I cut one up and made a sit pad that I can also use under my feet if needed. I took the same stuff and made a great freezer bag cooking cozy. I even used my sewing machine instead of tape on the edges. The sunshade I am talking about is the thin foam type, not the bubble wrap style by the way. I used a full length one last week between the layers of my poncho liner under quilt. The temps did not get very low that night...lower 50's at worst, but I was plenty warm. I did have just a little condensation. Many people on the forums have used them into pretty low temps along with some good warm clothes. The foam ones get really flexible with use too. Mine is folded into a ball with some straps around it to keep it tight in the pack.

I still take a 20" x 20" piece every trip. Good insurance just in case. I leave it on the ground and reach out at 3am every now and then when I'm pushing the limits of my UQ. But I won't dare use it to start the night...condensation like no tomorrow!

It weighs nothing, takes no space. Other uses for me:
    - stove windscreen
    - sit pad
    - to stand on when changing clothes (keep sand and mud off my socks)
