    Home made whoopie slings

I have just purchased some amsteel to make myself some whoopie slings. I would like them about 6 foot long so I know I need to use 12 foot of amsteel. Were can I get the other measurements for the fixed brummel and the back spliced end. I have found a link at samsonrope but I did not understand the meanings of FID

A fid is a type of needle used when working with the amsteel. It is also used when working with leather stitching.

I see but when it say 1 fid and 2 fid I am lost. I have watched a video on YouTube were it can be done with tape and a pen. So I need to know the measurements

A fid is a splicing instrument, but the length of a fid for a given cording is a multiple of the diameter of that same line (21). That's why splices are listed that way...in relation to the cording itself.

Here's a chart of some common cordage used by members of the forum, and the lengths that whoopie buries and eye-splice buries should be (per the manufacturer's safety ratings).

BTW simonx23 - You probably want to use 13ft of cording for 6ft slings. Some of the length will be lost due to the buries and backsplices.

Per Samson Rope..."The “fid length” for a rope is calculated as 21 times the rope diameter."

I can never get an image to post correctly so the link i intended to put here is not. Look on page 2 of my gallery.

On a yellow page, I sketched out measurements for making whoopie slings. Fid lengths are great for real splices, it omits a tape measure and math, but for whoopies, round numbers work fine.

Thanks chaps. I have done the fixed eye end so not I am going onto the adjustable loop end. What distance would you say from the tapered end of my fixed eye would you have your exit hole. I am working on doing a 8" bury

I normally only leave a gap of 1/2"-1" between the end of the taper and the exit for the adjustable bury to keep the overall minimum length of the whoopie as short as possible.

FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
