    Cheap pad DIY

3/8" closed cell foam pad from Duhams=$10
Mylar space blanket from Wallyworld= $2.97
Loctite spray adhesive from the tool bench=$0
Sprayed the Mylar and glued it around the back pad.
Should help beat the chill on a budget!

Those space blankets are toasty! I once made a pad (with extended sides) out of two layers of subfloor insulation and a space blanket sandwiched in the middle- it worked very well except one thing. Wherever I put the glue, the reflective characteristics were absorbed by the glue, and lost the reflective ability.
Anyhow- innovation takes time :-) Good work!

Space blankets work by reducing heat loss through radiation... if you're touching the SB, the heat loss is through convection through the plastic film... Realistically, they HELP, but laying on one does not make you warm... Pads are the way to go.

I always carry one, because adding it to my underquilt helps, if I go beyond the UQ's comfort range..

Provided you have a good sleeping bag (rated to say 10F-15F) would this combo keep someone warm on a night that would dip to the high 20s?

Foam UQ gives cold shoulder to camper! Unfortunately, most 24 in. wide foam pads aren't going to keep your shouiders warm. Search HF for how to add "wings" to the upper shoulder area. On the cheap, some HD duct tape would suffice to join the wings to each side.

As a "canoe camper" I find that it's really simple to roll my pad around the inside of my pack. That gives everything more padding, including ME! It better protects my stuff, insulates it better and is so easy to store. I can use it to keep my pack sides up in camp or thrown under my backside to eliminate CBS. Win/Win!

I tried the duct tape route a couple of nights ago, and the next day I found the pad neatly rolled with the wings and tape laying beside it. Short of completely covering it in the sticky stuff, are there tricks?
