Hi all,
After reading these forums and modifying my HH with rings and straps, I thought I would jump into the shark infested waters. I just bought a Domestic 808 and will soon start trying to learn how to use it, then start on some stuff sacks and maybe progress to snakeskins for the tarp I hope to acquire one day. I feel myself sliding on that slippery slope.

It's a slippery slope, but after all is said and done you end up with a lot of great gear.

I'd better get sewing again myself, I've got a lot of stuff I'd like to make before winter!

welcome Oak. It's a slippery slope indeed. Suggest that before you are consumed with the DIY fever you send the family upstate (the disease is contagious, you know), make sure the life insurance is paid up and your last will and testament made out to your satisfaction. Once the disease hits the later stages all you can do is read HF and inject thread.

I hear you all. I'm off to buy thread and some material to start learning. I expect to read all of the threads here again that have anything to do with DIY. In my favor, I'm employed in a kind of seasonal job so I should have enough time to get completely into it or completely frustrated, whichever comes first.
I do expect I'll be around asking for advice and guidance.

Oh yeah,
I just had a thought

, what size thread will be needed for stuff sacks and/or bar tacking a loop into a length of webbing? I guess, and I do mean guess, that the two tasks will need different threads? What do I need to know about needle sizes?

I am such a rookie!

I bought a cone of thread from Ed Speer a while back. I use it for just about everything.

I've yet to run out of it. Also there's a picture of a spool you can make to hold it on the bottom of the page.

My experience is that for DIY gear for my own use the issue of thread and needle size are not significant. I would feel differently if I were doing custom sewing for hire. But I use whatever I have as long as the fabric don't break the needle.

I found this forum through Whiteblaze about 3 months ago and as of today, I have made 3 hammocks, a pillow, numerous stuffsacks, and now I've got to make some curtains for my oldest daughters bedroom. Be careful with your newfound hobby!!!!!!!!!
