I could be wrong (I very often am, thank goodness), but I believe one of these scrubbies would have to be used for a VERY long time....over and over and over to do damage to a tarp or hammock. (I guess if something heavy were packed on top of a tarp that was encased in one of these, and if that heavy something moved around a lot... essentially grinding the scrubbie material against the tarp, it wouldn't be good... but I'm pretty careful with my gear, so I'd hope that wouldn't happen).
Unfurled, the material is remarkably soft...which is why it has to be bundled, bunched and tied before it's any good at scrubbing.
My guess is that wadded-up bug netting would also make a pretty decent shower scrubbie (Hmmm.. maybe I'll try that sometime). So far, however, the netting of the scrubbie seems to be just strong enough to do what I need it to do (enclose and hold) while soft enough to avoid causing undue friction or wear... guess I'll find out over time.
I've been paying a LOT more attention to the various types of scrubbies sold since the inital "AHA!" moment...(Maybe I can earn a Ph.D in Scubbiology?) some are VERY flimsy and some are quite sturdy. I have seen some small ones made for Kitchen/Dishwashing-type use that look as if they could possibly cause some damage. Overall, however, I am pleased with the ones I made. I'll let everyone know if I notice any "scrubbed" spots on tarps or such.
As DivaB said, even if one of these lasts only a season, it's less expensive and such a quick thing to make. I will keep using them until I see any negatives (any wear on the hammock or accessories) outweighing the positives (saved time and money).
Anybody know if the scrubbies can be recycled?
well don't that just take the cake
oh my. im so glad i found this thread. ive been looking to make some for a few days. and thought well maybe just maybe theres someone who thought of a CHEAP way to make them... and leave it to HF to find someone! yes! thank you!
