    DIY- Insultex Vs Down.

Hi guys I'm planning to start planning an UQ for my ENO doublenest soon. I am a very warm furnace sleeper and dont usually get down below 40 when I'm camping.

My biggest concern is keeping the weight as light as possible. So... Insultex vs Down? Pros Cons?

Hi there - A 3 layer Insultex will get you to the 40's no problem. It's also cheaper than down, fairly light weight, doesn't pack down as much as down - yes, pun intended - and can have condensation problems as it is basically a vapor barrier. I have 2 of them and use them for summer/spring/fall and in winter with my down UQ. If it gets wet - it will dry fast as it's just plastic basically.

Down will be more expensive, a little lighter, will pack down smaller and depending on the temp rating, can be used year round. No condensation problems, but if you get it wet, your in trouble trying to keep warm. Takes longer to dry out.

I have both types but I would lean toward the down - down is hard to beat for warmth.

    Hope this helps.

The ease of making one of these is pretty attractive, however I think the condensation factor kills it for me. Im a heavy sweater if I get overheated and I hate condensation. I'll probably make a 1/2 or 3/4 length light weight one for summer later on, but right now Im looking to make a versatile first UQ.

    Thanks for the input.

If you sweat and you don't want a vapor barrier then don't go with the IX. I sweat profusely and I made a 4 layer IX full length UQ. Let's just say it keeps me more than warm enough, but it also keeps me rather soggy on the back. The dang thing feels like a heating pad on my back which is freaking amazing (and why I chose it) but i am definitely looking at a modified design that will help vent it some what to reduce the vapor barior aspects.

it's a quilt usually either synthetic or down that hangs tight against the outside of the hammock underneath you for insulation

Hammonkey, how much DIY experience do you have? Having made both IX and down quilts, I know the IX is way easier to make. A down quilt isn't too hard, but it involves more pieces to assemble, plus stuffing the down. You can do it as a first project, but I don't usually recommend it unless you have experience sewing, etc. Lost Biker has it right on the pros and cons.
