    Funky UQ odor

Just returned from 2week section hike on at. It rained almost everyday and was very humid and foggy for the duration. None of my gear got wet directly from the rain but due to ambient conditions its was damp. I noticed on day 2 my Uq developed a funky smell, which is saying a lot since I hadn't showered in 2 weeks. I came home and put in dryer on super low heat and tennis balls. After 10 min i took it out and odor was gone. I was wondering if this is normal due to the down treatment? It is an econ 20* incubator dwr treated down from HG. I will say the econ is a great uq and kept me toasty.
    Thanks for any input.

All my down gear smells a bit like wet dog when it gets damp, even just from high humidity. You get used to it, and it goes away when it's actually dry.

It's probably just that down being an animal product emmits an odor when damp, as dogs do. I doubt the treatment has anything to do with it. I get the same thing with CDT's which are most likely not treated.

I agree. I've only had one product that was so bad it needed to be returned (a Marmot 15° sleeping bag).

Thanks, figured it might just be the down and natural odors once damp. Hadnt thought of returning it. Just wondering if it was normal. The dryer and tennis balls knocked it out. Thanks for your replies.

I have a 20 degree UQ that I swear is stuffed with butt feathers. It wreaks of that "gamey" smell, even when dry. It's the only one I have that smells like that. Apparently it's a normal thing. I've considered selling it, but how do I sell something that smells like goose butt?

That would be a perfect description of the smell, couldnt think of the right adjectives to use though. A non scented dryer sheet with mine on lowest heat got rid of smell in 10 min.
Tempted to hang it oitside today since humidity is almost 100% and see if the odor returns.

Mine get that way when I get really damp. I actually use it as an indicator for when I'll start to lose insulating warmth.

Hahaha that would be an awesome discount quilt idea. "Freshly plucked butt feathers that stay together and share their fragrance forever!" Let's start recording the commercial

The reason you notice that wet dog smell is that after down is cleaned it is treated with the same deodorizer that dog groomers use. It's usually because your down is damp (usually from humidity). The only fix is to dry the down, either by airing the quilt out or using a dryer. Follow the manufacturers instructions on using a dryer, because it's easy to ruin your quilt if you don't follow the proper procedures.
