UQ Attached with Velcro?

I'm looking at possibly buying a Baby Orca 3/4 length UQ from MacEntyre, and I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried attaching the Orca (or any quilt) using Velcro. My first thought is it would make an absolute seal, and would not slip under the hammock.

I suppose a possible negative would be the weight of the Velcro, but I don't think it's all that heavy. Thoughts?

One other negative...you can't ventilate very well without waking up the entire wilderness...I haven't had to do it much, but I was glad for the ease of use shock cord offers. I have also thought of the same thing as well. While you're at it, sew an extra strip of Velcro on each side so you can attach another quilt for more warmth. Just a couple of thoughts from me....oh and to me the weight of Velcro vs utility is totally worth it. Good luck with your possible project and post pics or it didn't happen...

I believe some of your challenges are going to be lining up the UQ properly, the noise of fastening and then unfastening the velcro and getting one side of the velcro all gunked up with... gunk. Oh yeah, the weight too. Also, with an "absolute seal" you lose the ability to vent should you get warm at some point during the night.

You might be able to achieve a similar result with some of the products that Dutch offers as well as lots of practice.

I find that dialing in a setup takes lots of practice and it's good to rely on your skills and ability to set up your gear properly as situations often dictate the necessity to adapt.

If you do the velcro option post some pics and let us know how it works for you. As always, what is good for one hanger may not be good for others so I say try it out.

Just a thought, you might want to try Omni Tape instead of velcro. I mention this as velcro has a nasty habit of snagging on your lightweight fabric and causing snags in things like your hammock.

I am interested to see your results and how it works for you.

Ever considered small rare earth magnets? they can hold up plenty of weight and would be much quieter. Also no chance of the velcro messing up your bug net.

My Speer Snugfit quilt attaches with omni tape. Fantastic design.

My peapod seals with omni-tape, and it seals well, but I don't really like the omnitape and wish there was a better way.

When I finally get time to do some DIY, I may change it.

The weight of velcro or omni-tape isn't the problem, it's what it does to your clothes that bothers me (plus the noise it makes as mentioned above). I've found small shock cord sown into the side of the UQ and set along each side of the hammock as the best solution.

I attach my PLUQ with small carabiners at each corner but I have 3-2" strips of velcro sewn along each side that I hook to the velcro that runs along each edge that my hammock came with. Seems to work very well at keeping the quilt in place.
