Looking for trails around Minnesota....
I'm familiar with the SHT and love it, but would love to know about others...especially any that may be closer to the twin cities.

try wild river state park, that is pretty close to you.
they have horse and people only trails, fyi some horses tend to think backpack turns you into a hunchback...
Second that at Wild River. They have 35 miles of hiking and horse trails pluss 6 to 8 primitive backpacking camping sites. I think Forum member Pizza did a nice video from a backpacking site at this park.

Jerry,
I'm very familiar with wild river. I'm talking more about backpacking trails. I understand that I could sort of do my own thing in a state park, but their campsites never really feel all that secluded, plus you have to pay for them. I have been looking into state forests and dispersed camping. Anyone know of a good forest for that?

Hey hiking dad, I might have a suggestion for you. How about Richard j dorer hardwood memorial state forest. It looks huge on a map... I'm not sure how far of a drive it is for you, but it's definitely shorter than a flight is for me.

My forum name is Fish<><; I'm in the navy; and I hate sleeping on the ground. If I didn't need ground to walk on or measure resistance to, I think I could happily give it up.
We did the first MN Winter Hang here.

I don't know anything about it but the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin is probably the closest long distance trail to the Twin Cities. There also the North Country Trail along the South Shore. I know people who have hiked in Itasca State Park. They liked the trails. The best hiking though is in northern part of the state.

Check out Paul Bunyan, Blackduck state/Chippewa national forests that surround leach lake.
I always drive through the Chippewa National Forest on my way to backpacking in Itasca and up the North Shore. Are there hiking trails in the National Forest? Where can you find more information about it?
thanks guys! I'll be looking into some of those places.
