Any tips for hamocking in the rain?

    Hey everyone,
I'm not a regular backpacker, but I make at least 1-2 backpacking trips a year, and am planning on becoming a more regular backpacker now that I am out of college and have free weekends. I'm planning on going on a short(14 miles) overnighter with my fiance this weekend, and of course it's supposed to rain and be fairly cold. I got into hanging this summer, and have not had any problems with cold/rain so far. Just learned about using drip lines a week or so ago, so I was wondering if there was anything else that might be helpful to try out. I have a nice toxaway tarp that I just received that I'll be using as cover for my fiance, and a smaller tarp that came with a hammock I bought from another HF member. Just want to be prepared considering I'm expecting to get rained on, and I really want to get my fiance into hanging as well.

tarps go up first. Rule #1 when it's raining. Rule #2- take some time under your tarp to think about how you'll go about things, instead of rushing around trying to be dry.

Another rule: pay attention to site selection, how the wind is blowing, etc.

Quick dry clothing is certainly helpful. I still see people on the trail wearing jeans which is fine in fair weather but not the best choice for being wet and cold. They don't need to be expensive high tech outdoor clothing just the proper material. I wear outdoor pants from Costco that were $20 and they perform well.

In the past I have taken some cues from jungle survival and have a "wet outfit" that I accept will always be wet and then have something dry to hang and sleep in. Fortunately I don't get cold easily so I'm not uncomfortable wearing wet or damp clothing as long as the temps are not too low.

if the smaller tarp you are talking about is a HH tarp... make sure you have it setup right... there is not much room for error with one
but as long as it's set up right and you have drip lines you should be ok... but have a backup plan in case it doesn't work out

small tarps are not forgiving ....
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

it's a tarp that came with a siam hammock. I'll be the one with the smaller tarp, so i'll probably just keep it as low as I can and do my best to angle it against the wind

    Yes, use a tarp.

Tarp up first. I like the continuous ridgeline with prusiks, so I can adjust it back and forth and get it just right, and if you then set up the hammock, if the tarp isn't centered, you can slide it over a little.
