I don't count as an Alaskan but I married into it, so I'm Montalaskan. I have not hung in AK yet but I will next year.

I know that MedicineMan and Poof made a video hanging up there and there are a few members from state 49.

Having seen moose in my in-laws back yard, I'd be careful about it. Momma moose are bad news!

I'm a HF lurker in southeast Alaska.
I haven't had the urge to hang any colder than 20F, so no real cold weather advice.

As far as wildlife, I woke up to the sound of a porcupine climbing one of the trees I laid claim to. Nearly scared the piss out of me. Keep the bear spray on your ridge-line in case of close encounters.

I did have the opportunity for summer hammocking on Admiralty island, 'Fortress of the bears' in the native tongue, but I wimped out and used a sleeping pad on the deck of the boat.
Worst night sleep I've had since I began hammocking.

I do plan to make a few snowshoe trips this winter if i can catch a weekend without so much rain

Hi from Sitka Ak, I have been hanging indoors full time for over a year. Intended to sleep out this past summer but it was the worst summer in 40 years, wet, cloudy and cool. Never quite got around to it. Bears are also an issue, Baranof Island has the second highest concentration of brown bears in Alaska. Much safer on the boat. Lots of good trees though!

does sound like a rough summer, at least you did some indoor hanging.
i would be worried about the bears i would have to bring some bear spray at the least to try and help deal with one if it got to close.

    Alaskan wannabee here

Former Alaskan here. Stationed at Fort Richardson (Anchorage) for 5 years. Unfortunately, I got started hanging after I left. Being in the military there, we do lots of winter training. I'd love to go back and do the outdoor sleep portion of it in a hammock. I've seen -20 F there a few times.

    Brrrr...
