today I slept on the front porch, which you can't call camping exactly,
haha!
but just wanted to know if any of you have ever woken up to
the sound of rain hitting your tarp?
Just thinking that if that happened everytime you went bed nobody would need noise makers!
although I don't uderstand why you would need one!?!?!

Not long after getting our hammocks [1] we decided to give an overnight a go in the back yard [2] so I dutifully set up my hammock, bug net and tarp [3], leaving room for her hammock as well. After dark we settled in for what was the most uncomfortably hot night I've experienced since my days in the Army. To make matters worse, there were all manner of noisy critters making sleep difficult at best [4] and prompting me to announce "Nature sure is loud. I wish 'Nature' would shut the <expletive deleted> up so I can get some sleep!" [5]. It finally did and I finally did. That said, I still felt great the next morning. It was the first time in years I've woken up [6] and not been stiff/sore/achy/etc.
[1] I have a DoubleNest, G/f has a Grand Truck... something or another
[2] July in Alabama can be "warmish", to put it mildly. At 2 am the temp was still in the upper 80s
[3] Tarp was primarily to keep pine tree "poop" of us.
[4] Didn't think to bring earplugs
[5] Now a running joke between us, albeit cleaned up an suitable for all audiences.
[6] By the neighbors dog barking right in my ear

I love the sound of crickets asd well its become a lullaby to me

although the one animal I don't like to hear is a black bear crashing through the woods around my hammok

Crickets and rain drops are great, natures lullabies.
The rain is surprisingly loud, but it drowns out the dogs.
Crickets and rain are fine. It was the cacophony of cicadas and chorus of dogs barking that was so bad.

Packs of howling/barking hunting dogs chasing hogs all night!
Makes ME want to take up hunting - for the dogs!!
All the others sounds are "natural" and I enjoy them as part of my quest for the outdoors. I like even hiking in the rain so I have no problem with on my tarp. Owls! Now there's a lot of "sound to weight" ratio! But I love hearing them.

I enjoy hanging by swift moving creeks and streams... very relaxing. Sometimes when I'm hanging by a gentle falls I'm at one with the universe and can only, just barely, hear my children decimating the National Forest, and terrorizing the local flora and fauna--these are the moments we cherish.
