Not sure I read correctly but I was on the Hammock Gear site and it said shipping was free into Ontario.

Many people use a USA address, from a family member etc across the border, and then smuggle the banned substance in a car. Quilt traffickers.
oh, I'm much more than a simple quilt smuggler! The only gear that didn't come from the US was the hammock itself!

I live in both Canada and the USA. I have found in Canada that I can go and have a conversation with Customs. If I can not work out a deal I go back another day and deal with a different agent. I always get the duty, GST down from the original amount. You could also have someone purchase in the States repackage and send it onto you. I did that with my son's suits when he was a little guy and growing out of everything.
Hennessy is a Canadian Company.
I had posted this same question on Reddit's hammocking section a few months back and was told just to suck it up and pay the tarrifs, so I did just that. On my $165 SS UQ from Wilderness Logics I paid about $20 in brokerage fees (USPS). For my 20*F TQ/UQ (a $475 order) I paid about $30. All in all that wasn't bad, works out to about 6% which is less than the sales tax here.
Hey,
I thought that ther was no duty on items manufactured in the US.
Free trade or some such thing
That is true. However, the "duty" most people refer to is your local sales taxes plus a handling fee charged by Canada customs when shipping things via the postal service. The other item that gets called duty when it's not, is the brokerage charge when couriers (UPS, FedEx, etc) are used to ship packages internationally.

I ordered quilts from hammock gear - I did have to pay hst on them - an annoying tax but it's a purchase that is more of an investment on how well you sleep.
comfort and warmth are very important to me and I know that I will have to pay for that.
I have just recieved my HG Incubator and the UK customs stung me for £68, but all that downy goodness will be worth it. I am looking forward to flying home next week to check it out and see my family (better write that cos the missus may read this post lol).
