I gues I am thankful i only have 2 kids and a wife that wouldn't sleep outside.
I've got a ton of pics of our setups.... just still on the SD card
You know you're lagging when even your WIFE is asking why you haven't put a trip report up yet! At this point, if I take one, I take both, so yes it's only been stacked kiddos. This past weekend we were all tied off to the same three giant coastal redwoods. I promise I'll get a trip report (or two) this weekend if not a single pic or two in this thread before then. FWIW my oldest has a bladder of steel, so he ranks top bunk and stays put all night till about 0730 or so. I have to boost him in, but then he's good.

Why not put him on the bottom "bunk"? You should be able to cope with the extra height and getting in/out as you're taller (I assume). Same works for him (lower hammock / shorter). You're out of the fall zone of night time accidents. He's also lower so that if he does fall out it's less of a drop.
Worrying about him landing on you seems unneccessary, to me. I assume you're checking everything on his kit and when it's set up (if he does that). Therefore, the likelihood of the rig failing is the same, whether he's above you or beside. Just don't see it as a real issue.
There was also a post on here a little while ago about using spreader bars setting up two hammocks side-by-side off the same two trees. TBH, there's probably loads more such threads on HF, I just haven't spotted them. Side-by-side might be a better alternative for you and your kit?
Last, I just bought some grip clips to join tarps together. Not used them yet but I got them specifically so I can create one "big tarp" out of the ones I have for when I take either or both my kids.
I have had my son sleep above me twice and it works great. Only issue is getting him in and out in the same bugnet. I made a Fronkey bugnet and put him hanging above me. He hangs way too low but then again he is almost 4 and I wanted him close. by close I mean he is young and if he wakes up and needs too pee he is only a foot above me should he forget where he is and try to get up. Good thing is he has hung a few times now and I think he gets it so I will try putting him next to me next time.
Just a few pics of his hammock with mine. Wish they where better. His hammock is blue and its set above my bridge hammock.

Not sure how old your kids are. But on a recent scout trip we had this set up: one tarp, two hammocks bunk bed style and three ground sleepers perpendicular. We also had another set of bunk bed hammocks under a second tarp. We two leaders each had our own hammock and tarp.

Hammocks * Scouts * Kites

holly batman i don't think i would like to be any where near the bottom or top
Here is an idea but may not be possible in all areas.hang the head end of the hammocks on the same tree and the foot area on two trees side by side. You'd have a V between the hammocks. If hung close enough, the tarp would cover both.
Nothing to see here. Keep moving.
