I live in a downtown area and my bedroom faces the front of the house. Noisy every night with drunks yelling and singing, the "undesirables" in the apartment building across the street doing their thing, traffic, and yes, barking dogs. But out on my balcony at the back it's pretty quiet and I can get a good nights sleep. If I can ignore the kittykats scratching at the patio door to come outside.

I live on 5 acres on Whidbey Island in Washington State and all I hear are coyotes, owls, some sort of screeching bird and branches breaking. We have a lot of deer and the third night I spent out a fawn was bumping the side of my hammock trying to eat the grass under my hammock. I just watched her until she moved on. Obviously my scent didn't bother her...

I live on a pretty busy street. The street lights and traffic (especially motorcycles) are the worst but I've been wearing ear plugs ever since I started hiking with an industrial strength snorer so it doesn't bother me too much.

We just have normal subdivision on the edge of the woods noises...AC units, neighborhood dogs, occasional deer snorting, owls, coyotes, possums and raccoons. There are also railroad tracks about 3/4 of a mile away. I can sleep through most of that or if I do wake up, I listen for a minute then nod back off quickly (unless I'm awake enough to realize its time to go water the bushes).

The things that wakes me up the most is our 15 lb cat jumping up in the hammock with me a couple of times during the night. He's not too bad if he jumps in, settles down and goes to sleep...in fact, he makes a pretty good hammock warmer. But some nights he's in and out several times and seems to want to do some sort of cat dance on my chest after he lands. Good thing he's a really good cat and I'm a cat person...

My backyard hanging spot is about 1000 yards from a Level 2 Trauma Center helipad. Of course, the ambulances in and out are 24 hrs, too. And naturally, the entrance to the hospital complex is on a main street. Trains and planes aren't much of an issue for me, but coyotes and owls both live between my campsite and the hospital. And then there are the general city traffic noises, including motorcycles and garbage trucks.
Earplugs help, but aren't a perfect solution.
But, if I drive about 1.5 hours I can usually find someplace quieter for an overnighter...

We have two Great Pyrs that are across the street and starting between 3-5am they decide to let everyone know that they are patrolling.

It's annoying when you are inside, but when I hang outside it's almost unbearable.

I grew up with two brothers. Now I have three sons. My wife sometimes forgets her sleep apnia (sp?) machine.

    I can sleep through anything.

BTW I just spent the last two nights out in the hammock as well. Testing out cool weather set ups for me snd my youngest. Temps got down to 40. Love it!
