I've only just got a top quilt. Until now I've used my sleeping bag, mostly unzipped as a quilt. I have used a Hennessy Double Bubble reflective pad and/or the Hennessy Super Shelter under cover for back insulation. I'm working on a DIY under quilt now.

With our powers combined... we should be able to get these hammocks out of the dirt.

I use a MH Ultralamina sleeping bag and the problem with that bag is it only zips to the stomach level.. many times i am wrestling around trying to get in that thing... until i got the tyvek ground cover.. i get in my bag before i get in.. no more struggling :0) and no more yelling from my husband "hey what's going on over there?!"

I love using a sleeping bag. I just throw it in, then I get in the hammock. Push my feet and legs into the bag to stretch it out, then sit up and throw the rest of the bag behind me toward the head end. Done. There's something magical about zipping that big fluffy hood around your head - warm and air tight except my ice cold nose.

Plus, my Marmot bags allow you to move the down to the top or bottom giving you a truly versatile quilt when temps jump around on you.

I find that I can get into the warmer full zip bags without a problem while laying in the hammock.
It's the half-zip lightweight bags that give me fits!

But all I can say is that after switching to TQ,......I wonder why I waited so long.

My sleeping bag is double zippered (I think most are). I unzip the foot box enough to stick my feet out. Then I climb in and zip it up around me. I'm OCD about standing on my sleeping bag on the ground, so this way I can waddle over to the hammock. I zip up the feet after getting in.

Never had a problem... I always lay the bag out fully unzipped, and squirm up towards the head end. Flop feet into foot box. If I need to I can arch my back up and inchworm my way to a good position. A bigger problem is getting the darn thing straight side to side, I'm always wanting to pull up on the wrong side to close it, I should have got the left zip instead of the right.

I got the triple zip mod that converted HH to top entry. Much easier to sit on top of bag and lay down. I next made an UQ from poncho liner - then just use my bag as a TQ.

My first night (in a kite-string hammock) I only had a down mummy bag. Aside from horrible CBS and contortions to get in and out of the thing (I actually subluxed my [already] crappy shoulder briefly at one point), the bag would slide down instantly. Within five minutes, my center of gravity (chest) was right at the bottom of the sag

After two hours of this nonsense, I'd had enough and tied the tip of the head end to the tree with some paracord. Worked all night, and in the morning...every seam at the end of the bag was ripped open ! I'm currently looking into TQ's before I try cold hammocking again...

I use a Big Agnes bag that features a pocket for your pad, beneath you. That added rigidity makes it pretty easy to squirm into the bag in the hammock. I do sometimes use the standup-sitdown method, though, like in Shug's video.

Haha the visual i get of that is priceless! Kind of a flintstone idea in my head.
