    Hammocks and Deer

Was looking at my first hanging adventure last year in Glacier Peak Wilderness and reminded me of the family herd of deer that hung within 10 yards of my hammock (at about 2 a.m.).

Noise woke me up, raised myself up and scanned with my red headlamp and spotted all these pairs of eyes staring back!!! The quietness of the hammock didn't scare them and they kept eating and eventually walked away. Of course initially I thought a bear was sizing me up!

At a different location the following night I hung on some trees next to a grass field. Same thing happened and 3 deer actually laid down and slept within 15-20 yards of my hammock for about 2 hours.

Only in a hammock!!! loved it!

Here is a picture of the first time I hammock'd (?) @Glacier Peak Wilderness
p.s. yes those are kangaroo skin five-fingers on my feet that I hike in.

I have since SOLD ALL my tents and done about 25+ days in my hammock...both motorcycling and hiking trips. Won't turn back now but will add a ridge line so I can store a camera in the future.

    Glacier is gorgeous!

At the 3:30 mark in this video Kiba and I had 3 deer walk right past us. So cool!

My first hang something bumped into me at about 0230 or so. Then it snorted at me. I was a little concerned, as it had been raining I allowed the wife and kids to eat in the tent, and we were in the forest that produced one of the most iconic bear mascots in the US. Tracks the next morning showed that three mulies walked into camp, and one walked right up to the hammock.

    Welcome from Florida!
A friend I was hanging with got bumped from underneath by a foraging armadillo! That made for a good laugh (after positive identification).

That's why I woke at every bloomin sound. The pistol in the waistband was a bit reassuring. I also had a four year old that tried to climb into my hammock at every opportunity. I just never knew if he was going to get up and take a walk. He never did wake up for a middle of the night walk, but he wanders around at home all the time.

I had a skunk walk under my tarp and poked my backside with its nose. I didn't move, and didn't breath if I could help it. I think I'd prefer a deer!!!

    Now that's a serious encounter!
I think I'd prefer a bear. If you scream at a bear, it will probably just run away. But screaming at a skunk... well..

I had a deer bump into me once, he was eating the grass underneath my hammock. His/her mate (I guess) was further up the hill stamping on the ground and snorting. Didn't want to startle it because if it had horns, they would have gone right into me when he raised his head. Have had numerous skunks under my hammock, mostly the small dark ones with brown strips and spots on them.
