    Fabric Width?

I scored a great piece of nylon but it's extremely wide. I used zip ties to test out some lengths and found a sweet spot, but there is a lot of fabric "unused" in it's width. Is there a standard out there for hammock width? I've looked at a lot of posts but most of the discussion is on length. Thanks!

Typically fabric comes in 54"-64" widths. Sometimes 48" for some smaller hammocks, but I think most all I've made were around 60" prior to hemming.

Good question.I been looking for the same info.I think the real question should be, what is the desired finished width?I know there is no one size fit all answer.

I've found around 60" to be just right for me. I'm 5'6". I actually cut off the side of one of my ENO's to narrow it because I didn't like the excess material that tended to flop and bug me. YMMV.

Look around at some of the mfg websites. Hennessy Exped is 52" wide, Warbonnet Traveler is 65" wide. ENO Single is 55" and the ENO Double is 74". They're all over the place.

It's a matter of fabric and preference. Some want narrower because it's less weight. Some want wider because it's easier to get a good diagonal going. That also depends on your height.

There's certainly no "one size fits all."

That's the exact info I am looking for.

Typically synthetic fabric is 60" wide. That hems down to between 56-58" . Wider fabric is available from certain mills depending on the application for which it was made.

Natural fibers are typically woven 36-44" depending on the specific fiber. Silk can run narrower than cotton or wool for example. Just the nature of the industry.

By joining panels you can make the width as wide as you want. By trimming the panels you can make it as narrow as you want. There are no standards etched in stone to my knowledge.

My personal favorite is made from 1.4 from DIYGearsupply. It's 60" and comes out around 56" after hemming.

What suits you though is anybody's guess...

If your fabric seems too wide, fold it back and try it before you cut it off.

This is a great idea! Thanks for all the manufacturer info... Should have thought of that one.

I've made hammocks in the past but this nylon I purchased is much wider than any I've ever used. In fact I can't remember ever having to worry about width... Just hem and hang. Now I need to get creative with the cutt offs.
