    Knotty mod vs. TZBrown Footbox

Well my fabric is in the mail for my first DIY hammock. First attempt at a hammock but have made plenty of other things.

I am debating between making a 120"x59" finished size rectangle hammock with channel ends and Knotty mod at foot and maybe also at the head end. Or going with TZBrowns footbox hammock with asym rectangle overall length of 120". footbox side length being 105" and opposite side being 100".

Has anyone made/compared both and have an opinion?

I am about 5'11 and weight 180lbs. I would say I am a pretty average build with good square shoulders.

I have built a Knotty method, and like it a lot, when there is unlimited space and weather is good. Construction is quite easy.

The only real difference in the two is that the footbox one I did, after the SRL is on it, is less than 8 feet long, and hangs in a smaller spot.
Your feet are almost right below the knot at the foot end with that type of footbox.
Lots of coverage with an 11 foot ridgeline tarp.

Knotty's keeps the gear inside just as well but the hammock overall is longer on the SRL.

The advantage of Knotty's is that there is no worry about the sides tearing at the footbox if you were to sit on that edge.
On mine I used a zing-it line, in the side hem to avoid a possible issue.

I have about 100 nights on the footbox one I built with no issues.
The wife has about 50 nights on hers. She is 5'4 and the hammock on the SRL is less than 7 feet.
The Knotty method one I have only about a dozen nights on.
When I do another I will do Knotty's stretch side on the shoulder side and the footbox on the other end.

I don't know if I helped, but all DIY is fun.
You might have to build more than one, just because you can.

I know the DIY bug has bit me hard. First I simply started modifying the ENO DN that I had and now I have material on the way for a hammock, underquilt and dog tent suspended from my hammock.

Trying to decided which to start with on the hammock design. maybe I will be satisfied with it and not think twice about ever making the other to try. but we all know this isn't true once you have been bit by the bug!

    no problem GG

I think I am going to start off with the Knotty mod and maybe down the road try one of TZBrowns.

I came to this conclusion for a couple reasons. first yes it is great to have a shorter hammock tucked up under your tarp but also with a shorter hammock and same length tarp there will be more distance between the tarp and hammock. so possibility of getting wet from side if you dont have a wide tarp like me. also I did some preliminary math on the weights and it might save 0.80 oz. to go with the TZBrown over the Knotty mod.
no offence to the creators I think both ideas are great and will probably try the other somewhere down the road

You may also want to consider Hangnout's footbox. It's my favorite. I'll see if I can find a link to a video that Medicine Man did, starting at 5:38 minutes of the video showed hangnout's footbox.
