Overnight in the Whites NH, gear check

    Hi all;

Hopefully this isnt the wrong place for this, if it is please move.

Making an overnight (or two) in the whites in NH, flat mountain pond area so nothing above 2000 ft at night. Low in waterville valley is saying 35 on Saturday night so minus a few. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need more at that temp... All comments welcome please. Thanks!

    Sleep system:

    HH expedition asym
    JRB winter nest
    Mountainsmith Wisp 30 degree bag
    Zpacks 4 season CF

    Clothing:

    Thermal legs
    Thermal top
    Montbel featherlight pants
    Patagonia rain shadow jacket
    extra pair smartwool heavy socks
Patagonia ultralight down shirt (could remove and take a western mountaineering flight jacket but felt was overkill)
    wristies
    down beanie

I think those are the things that matter, but if anyone is interested, here is the rest.

    Pack:

    ULA catalyst

    Cook kit:

    solo stove
    pinnacle solo pot/lid
    snow peak backpackers mug
    pinnacle convertible spork

    Misc:

poop kit: tp, friction balm, a few wet wipes

7ish matches, 3 stormproof, striker, mini bic, firestarters (petrol cotton balls), adventurer ultralight FAK (i think only two of the anti septic wipes have been used from it and one band-aid. rest is intact)

fenix e11, speedo shammy, thermarest lite seat, 2x poland spring thin bottles, sterilite adventurer (or platypus dirty bag plus gravityworks inline filter/tubes depending, might take the filter this time), map/compass, iphone, 3x4 tyvek sheet, pack cover, ursack bag, notepad, pencil, knife (forget the name), personal weather station clip on, poles.

I might be missing someting and probably am. Anyway, will be a nice trip. Foliage is in the extreme right now.

That sounds like a kit I would be comfortable with in those conditions.

I will be in the Whites next week!

Looking good there, but with the seasonal change I hope your fire making skills are up to it. This remark is by no means negative/paternal or whatever, it was just initiated by the "7-ish matches"

The cooler temps, the wet weather chances: welcome hypothermia ...

Again, don't mean to be negative, maybe I am already in survival mode for the coming weekend, wet and around freezing ...

    Enjoy!

A 30-degree bag seems light for the conditions you'll be in. But you know yourself and your sleep comfort zone. Have fun! I wish I was going with you!

If the conditions stay the same as you say, looks good - except maybe the "Zpacks 4 season CF". Can't for the life of me figure out what that is. "CF" usually means Cuben Fiber. Not a thing, but what a thing might be made of? I've looked at the Zpacks website and am unable to find anything that fits the "CF" abbreviation. Sorry to be so dense.

I like to think my fire making skills are good, they haven't failed me yet at least knock on wood! I could take the warmer jacket just in case though, its only a few ounces more.

You're probably right here, the next best thing I have is a 0-degree TQ, I could roll with that.

Haha sorry, I forgot to put the word "tarp" after it.

Melrose... how about that. Malden here.

Hung at Flat Mountain Pond last spring. Very pretty area.

Your gear list looks workable. My only concern would be the 30°F bag, but I've never used a JRB winter nest, so maybe that may be fine. In the event of a gear problem the walk out (depending on where you parked) is either a very gentle long walk, or a mostly downhill shorter walk.

There are some decent hanging trees behind the shelter, but be wary of the location of the privy and prevailing winds...

As you walk in, make note of some of the established campsites - they might provide a peaceful alternative in the event the shelter is full of late night revelers.

You may also want to keep your eyes open for any standing deadfall or other wood sources as you approach the shelter. There is a large firepit in front of the shelter, but by this time of year, most of the easy to find wood has been collected and burned. There are typically signs when you are within a 1/4 mile of the shelters. Usually some good wood finds between the signs and the last tenth of a mile.

All in all, it's a pretty area, and I hope you have a great trip.

McRat is pro in the Whites, he's spot on with his post. I'd definitely bring the 0F top quilt instead of the 30.

Have a blast, I am jealous. Take pics and give us a report when you get back. I will be camping in the lakes region early next week.
