Greetings fellow hangers. Me and a few friends have been camping in hammocks for only about three years. I am the cheapest; with a Military Jungle Hammock (Thank you ebay) while my buddies are using a Clark (model name unknown). Yes, theirs are nice, warm, fit well, hang well, pack small, etc...but I just couldn't justify to my wife spending that kind of money on a hammock! (she's just not that into it).
Mine is a love/hate relationship with the military jungle hammock. I've learned (by error) to hang with a little flex so I don't roll the darn thing over while I'm zipped inside. (yes, that was quite a sight for my camping friends, i'm certain). I am considering tweaking the beast, but am unsure exactly where to start so I happened on the forum and was delighted to read many informative posts.
As we are 4 season campers (in michigan that can be challenging), I am intrigued by the idea of an underquilt, but because we are backpacking our gear into the woods, it's difficult to justify the extra weight. I've seen the guys that are using Poncho Liners for UQs, and the ideas sound great, but I always thought the PLs worked best when against the body to retain the heat. (?).
I am also considering stitching in some stuff pockets in the bottom (canvas) of the hammock (much like my friends' Clark has); for warmth as well as functionality. (Can one ever really have enough pockets to put things in?) :-)
Okay, much too long for a typical introduction...thanks for bearing with me.
Hopefully I'll make some new friends to "hang" with on here...(bad bad pun) and learn a few things as well.
Michael
