Thats is a big draw for me as well. Love the DIY aspect of camping/backpacking, and the likes. I just made 2 hammocks from tablecloths and workng out the details for the intergrated bug net. Once I get that done time for a tarp, top quilt, and under quilt. By spring I should be able to do a group hang, and see how others have done it first hand. Then Im pretty sure the process will start all over again.
Oh the maddness of it all!
I have a long weekend planned early in November. I will probably take "Old Faithful" for that trip. It'll give me a couple of months before I'm back out again (after the first of the year) to work on something DIY. I am considering one inexpensive decrease adjustment though for Novembers trip; exchanging my Military Heavy Gauge Green Pad for a lighter, tighter WM blue one. Something that packs up smaller. I just hope it will still give me the stability (and warmth) the green one does in the old hammock!
Welcome from Oklahoma. I'm also fairly new to the forum. I think the DIY route will be easier than you think. Some ripstop from Hancock or one of the forum cottage suppliers, webbing and some 5 mil accessory cord from the outdoor stores, carabiners or rings to attach for my initial Knotty style hammock and I haven't been in my tent since. I also am thinking of putting pockets on the 2nd layer of next project hammock. Have to make a birthday present hammock first. Again, welcome

My first hammock was an Army Jungle. I was so new to hanging that I used 550 cord for the suspention. I stretched the cord so much that I ended up 2" from the ground, and I still slept better than in a tent.
Welcome to the forum. Maybe you can look in the DIY area to make your own hammock for a fraction of the cost of a ready made.

My first time hanging in this hamock; i tried to carefully string it up like the pictures showed when i purchased the thing. (ebay, heckuva deal). The images showed it pulled absolutely TIGHT on the bottom, and the top/sides hanging all squared, level and pretty. Needless to say, the first night...zipped up nice and secure, i moved to scratch and rolled the thing over. next thing I knew I was face down against the top (now the bottom) and was suspended from above, no longer below. Worse yet, I was zipped in a mummy bag and unable to get my arms out to unzip the hammock and get out. I had to holler for my buddies to assist. Yep, it's still a story that is told around the fire. I've since learned to have some give in the middle and not tie it quite so taunt to the trees. She's haggard and worn hard, but part of me still loves her.
