    ? Using double layer.

My DD frontline has a double layer bottom with easy access. I know an under quilt will trap radiant body heat and keep away the cold. My question is instead of stringing up an UQ can I get the same results by stuffing a bag in between the layers? Or has someone tried this and seen any issues I would run into?

No it compresses the insulation. If you want you can stick in the radiant pad or a closed cell foam pan or camp mattres between the layers

You would likely get some warmth, though not a full amount. You would be compressing the bag and thereby reducing it's potential loft. Double layers are typically used in conjunction with a pad to help hold the pad in place.

I agree with this. I have used a 40 degree bag rectangular bag between the layers and was very comfortable down to the upper 30's. I think that possibly the bag does get compressed but not as much as if you were laying directly on it. It may also depend some on the fill material - some may insulate better even when compressed - or not compress as much.

Makes sense wasn't thinking about compression

So what happens if the second layer is bigger?
I am debating a MYOG double layer hammock and haven't yet decided on a design

I was thinking this same thing, recently. There have been prototype hammocks ('Just Jeff' has a picture of one on his site) and others that have down/synthetic underquilts built into them and there are backyard type hammocks on the market that do this.

It would be reasonable to assume that it would work just fine if you put a little more material between the hammock body and the 'pocket' material but if you didn't have a quilt or something in there to fill the space I would imagine there'd be a lot of additional, perhaps unwanted, sagging. Unless, of course, you designed some kind of compression/strapping system to cinch the bottom pad pocket closer to the underside of the hammock body, in much the way more UQ's use shockcording around the edges to accomplish similar results.
