Michigan Fall Hang 2012- Hang em High Trip Report

Figured I would start a trip report going.

Well we had a great turn out. Going into it, we knew we where heading into some rain for the weekend. I think our optimism was just some rain, not the constant rain then flash flood warnings for the area. Friday was absolutely beautiful. The guys that came up Thursday found that our original meet up site at Seaton Creek was closed for logging, so we switched to Slagle Creek. This turned out to be a really nice place to camp as a group. You'll be able to see the great spots when others post up some pics. It got pretty chilly Friday night. Supposed to get down to 31 degrees. Weather forecast called for rain by 7am. Sure enough, started hearing drops hit the fly by 6:30. Paul from Underground Quilts had set up one of his Winter Tarps for a place to cook, eat, and just hang out. Great call because it got used. So most got breakfast and hung out at the fire. A group went off for a little soggy hike. By 1:00pm I started looking at the option of packing up. By 2:00, Bloomgorge, Questrek, and I started breaking camp. By 4:00pm, most of the group had given up on the idea of the rain letting up and started packing up also.

Not sure if anybody stuck around, but hopefully they where able to make it out on the 2 track we drove to get to the site.

It still was a good time. Got to see some of the great folks we have here in MI. And meet some of the recent newbies here in MI and IN.

I think we were the first to leave around noon, but best trip ever! Seeing everybody's setups were great. Friday night was great! Thanks to everyone who let borrow their spare underquilts. It was so beautiful up there. From the weather forecast it looks like it is still raining, hopefully everyone made it out not to waterlogged. Thanks again for all the fun it was great to meet you all!

    I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I would hate to see that road today.

That road was filling up more than I would have guessed. I bailed around 15:00, really had a good time tho'. It was good to see the everyone again and to meet some new folks. Paul's tarp was definitely a hit.
This was my first time using whoopie slings and I did enjoy the ease of adjustability. What I didn't like was that the rain ran down the whoopie into my hammock.... need to work on that I guess.
    Good luck,

We don't stop hiking because we grow old. We stop hiking because it's raining too much, with no end in sight.

I feel bad about bailing, but not so much that I regret the decision. I just hate to throw in the towel, but the towel was soaked.

It was great to see some familiar faces, to meet some new ones, and re-meet many I didn't remember. So now I know many of you by sight, but I'm still struggling to connect faces with forum names.

Anyhow, pictures. I have little to contribute. But here they are:

It's always fun up there in the Manistee ... I am surprised that I made it out of that old 2 track road, I could not help thinking when I was heading out "What if another car was heading in" ... Sure enough right when I made it to the main road and my car was steaming all over ... Someone was just about to head in .. lol. Glad that didn't happen ...

Got to see some good people again and learn some new stuff, like Bloom's reflective guylines (already bought some from Arrowhead) plus seeing Paul's stuff was cool .. I know what I'll be spending some money on this winter ...

Bloom thanks for the pullout lines ... I'll remember you gave them to me next time ...lol

I too hate throwing in the towel, but man that was the most rain I have ever had to camp in. Good test on gear and tarp setup. Hope everyone made it out sun.
