I can see why he gave it up. Works well when it works, but there is a constant threat of down exploding into your workspace.
My first outing with the quilt was pretty disappointing. I'll add more when I can get to the computer, later.

IMHO, most bad experiences with under quilts are due to suspension adjustments. Eager to hear what happened.

Still not at the computer and phone typing is a drag. Two issues on my hang. First, suspension would be improved by side channels w shockcord. I'll definitely add those to my second quilt. But worse, quilt seems too narrow for a diagonal hang. If I had my shoulder inside the quilt my feet were out, and vice versa. Now, my hang was also screwy because we were inside a shelter where my strap anchors were maybe ten feet high and too close to one another. But it seems to me that I designed a quilt that hangs in line with the ridgeline, while my most comfortable lay is quite diagonal. I'd love to get some feedback on that issue...
I agree that full-length channels and shock cord make life a lot easier. What was the finished width?
very interesting thread

Monk,
Would it be possible to make the attachment points or lines so that the under Quilt would lay at a diagonal with your body? Something along the lines of long to short lines on each side of the under quilt that run in opposite directions so the quilt would lay at a diagonal also.
I looked at several quilts and most seemed to run with the hammock and not at a diagonal. Maybe this is just how it is done, that would suck though.
A different option may be to sew on some small loops to the underside of the Hammock in the direction that you sleep and then hand the quilt from those with some small clips of some kind. I think this would be better in keeping the under quilt tight to the hammock and it would be fairly easy for you to do. Will I would think so after making your own quilt!
Let us know what you decide to do.
bmcsteve, The thing about making the under quilt so big is the additional cost for materials and the additional weight. If your car camping or the like it may work out, but backpacking it would probably double the weight of the quilt. At least that's my thoughts.

At the moment I am testing a different solution: a triangle of fabric attached to one corner of the foot end of the quilt. A kind of foot box but withe the purpose of keeping the quilt in place, so my feet don't pop out.
I am going to be thinking about this a lot before I sew my second quilt. A good diagonal lay is important to my sleep comfort, but so is being warm.
What a great thread. *Thumbs up
