    Shortoff Mountain, Linville Gorge. Overnight

I got a chance to take a quick overnight trip to Shortoff Mtn on Saturday. The weather was great, as was the company. We hiked up and hung out, visited the water tree spring, the water pipe, and generally just enjoyed the views.

We saw what might have been the Brown Mountain Lights, but it's hard to be sure.

The leaves are just starting to turn there.

Great weekend for some time on Shortoff ... but probably not a good idea to for your friend to carry his USFS camping permit in his shoe!

    Great photos, Thanks for sharing.

That really is a beautiful place. Are you heading back 21-28?

Yeah, you picked a perfect weekend weather-wise. Although I'm not too far, I've still never been there... Need to fix that!

Looks likes a great hang spot.

Yeah, he keeps his permits there with his hundred dollar bills... helps to plug the holes in his boots... Not a good place for them? I didn't get a good look at you guys as we were booking out of there, was that you out there, Hawkeye at the water pipe? I would have expected your usual hat. Sorry to run off, we were late to breakfast.

I'll have to see about returning 21-28. I need to work hard on my honey-do list before I'd be able to, and it's a busy time with the kid's schools...

Nope not a great place to put them considering the fine per person, for camping without a permit ... sometimes you get lucky. They've up the enforcement of permits this year. Just something to keep in mind from May to the end of Oct.

Once you go past the water pipe, there is one campsite on the left, then you come to this one (also on the left) just a little past that.

    Looks great. Lots of color.

P.S. I thought I was the only one who routinely keeps a line level on the ridge line!
