I got a chance to take a quick overnight trip to Shortoff Mtn on Saturday. The weather was great, as was the company. We hiked up and hung out, visited the water tree spring, the water pipe, and generally just enjoyed the views.
We saw what might have been the Brown Mountain Lights, but it's hard to be sure.
The leaves are just starting to turn there.

Great weekend for some time on Shortoff ... but probably not a good idea to for your friend to carry his USFS camping permit in his shoe!

Nope not a great place to put them considering the fine per person, for camping without a permit ... sometimes you get lucky. They've up the enforcement of permits this year. Just something to keep in mind from May to the end of Oct.Originally Posted by NCPatrick

Once you go past the water pipe, there is one campsite on the left, then you come to this one (also on the left) just a little past that.
