I have just bought an ENO hammock with slap straps. I got a really good deal from REI. Now I am learning that the slap straps are fairly worthless in light of Whoopies. I have never camped in a Hammock but am trying to learn all I can about it because it looks so fun. It is also a good way to get lighter in my backpack.
I look forward to learning a lot more from all of you and hope to make an outing one weekend!

Welcome. I use straps around the tree, using Dutch clips to secure them. then Dutch Buckles on the straps (in place of a marlin-spike/toggle set up). Then, whoppies. Less weight and lots of adjustability.
So, don't toss the straps just yet!
