    AT Thruhike with a Warbonnet.

Not me, but a guy that I met while I was working at LL Bean in Burlington, MA. Said he just graduated, and wanted to do a big hike, was thinking about a NOBO thruhike on the AT.

When I asked him a few questions, it was apparent that he was an enthusiastic, yet totally clueless Newb. I suggested he ditch the heavy 4-season tent, and think about a hammock. Explained everything, and gave him the website.

    That was six months ago.

He walked into the store yesterday, and hunted me down, and thanked me for all the suggestions (hammock and tarp, alchy or woodburner, gravity filter, etc.) He just finished the full AT NOBO in 173 days (planned on 180), even with a badly sprained ankle and a few 'zero' mile days thrown in there.

Had great pics, great stories (charged by a bear!), but wanted to thank me for the advice and encouragement, and to say that he thinks it would have been ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE for him to have finished without his Warbonnet hammock!

Just thought I would post this up here for Brandon to read. Your hammock took him end-to-end with comfort, and without fail.

===> Not sure I remember...I think he said it changed to something like "Barks At Bears". He also said that the final miles in the Hundred Mile Wilderness and the last few to the summit of Mt Katadyn were absolutely the toughest for him.

Do you think you could get him to post comments on the forum? I'd love to do what he did with my WBBB. It would be great to hear more about his ups and downs of using a hammock for the entire trek.

I did about 500 miles on the AT this spring (Springer to past Damascus) and frankly can't think of any downs using my hammock....all ups! Well...there was that one time when the tree I was attached to came crashing down landing inches from my head.

One thing I would consider if you are going with a WBBB is to take a Hammock Sock with you for at least the first couple of months. It got down to the low twenties several nights in April and almost down to zero a couple. I had a Dangerbird with a built in top weathershield....it made all the difference in the world.

I slept in my hammock every night on the trail and never had difficulty finding a place to hang. I always felt there were more places for me to hang than there were flat/clear places for tenters. Sometimes I would hang near a shelter mainly for the water source and company, but mainly I was off in the woods somewhere.

Of course there is the comfort factor, and that my friend is truly priceless. I plan on picking up where I ended this coming May. Perhaps I'll see you on the trail.
