Hi, my name is Mark and I am an Assistant Scoutmaster in my sons' Boy Scout troop in Granbury, Texas. I will be taking over as Scoutmaster in January.
For the past two years I have been transitioning from traditional weight backpacking supplies to a more lightweight approach and have been active on the BPL forums. My son and I went to Philmont Scout Ranch this summer and hiked 90 miles in 11 days which was the most we have done at one time.
I bought a Hennessy Hammock Deluxe Explorer A-Sym almost two years ago after seeing another scout leader with one on a campout. I have used it on only one campout at Caddo Lake in 2011 where it was a great solution. I haven't used it since as I had been perfecting my lightweight tent/backpacking solution for Philmont where hammocks are not allowed. Now that Philmont is finished I am focusing on hammock camping to see if it is for me. I don't normally sleep well on campouts and I hope maybe hanging will change that.
I have a JRB Sierra Sniveller quilt which is a top quilt, but I want to try and adapt it as an underquilt until I can get a dedicated underquilt. I will also be switching out the suspension on the HH and after spending 3 straight days studying the different options on this site I finally think I know what I'm going to do... put chain links on the hammock which can then be attached to Whoopie Slings via Dutch Hooks and hooked on a Dutch Buckle, or in a short tree span scenario just hang the chain links directly on the Dutch Buckle.
I look forward to the process and thanks in advance for your help!
Mark
