Soft Shackles and Continuous Loops

Hey all,

First off, I apologize if there is already a thread on this topic out there; I couldn't find one. I am working on making my setup a little more lightweight. I made my own whoopie slings with amsteel over the summer and love them, and I ordered an adjustable ridgeline from whoopieslings.com today. I have seen pictures and tutorials for soft shackles and continuous loops, and I was just wondering if they have a specific, beneficial purpose, or if they are fun little customizations we hammockers are so fond of. Any insight and suggestions would be much appreciated!

I made a few continuous loops for my suspension that just seemed to make it easier for me to attach my Ridgeline to.

Once I get some more, I'll be reworking my suspension to use them through the channels of my hammock to attach to whoopie slings.

Continuous loops are what prusiks are made from and prusiks are pretty handy for all sorts of rigging. I use soft shackles on my tree straps but they are far from necessary.

I love continuous loops. Primary use them as prussics, but also am using them to attach descender rings to my ENO DN to remove the stock cord. They work great as little prussics on my tarp guylines as well for easy tension adjustment. I first made some soft shackles so that I could attach my whoopies to my tree straps. This works, but it wound up being a pain to open and close them all the time. Milking them closed as also tiresome. I now use a toggle with marlin spike hitch instead of soft shackles for connecting my whoopies. However, I do use lots of prussic soft shackles. I have these for my tarp ridgeline, extras to attach whatever to my backpack.

I use continous loops for my suspension when trees are too close to use a whoopie sling. I also use one on each end of my tarp suspension. I warp my tarp suspension around a tree. There is a loop made with a Blake's Hitch. The loop goes through the continous loop. the continous loop is then attached to tarp's button knot. This allows quick, easy, removable suspension that is easy to adjust and no hardware.

Both are very useful (your imagination is the limit), I love them! I use soft shackles on my tarp ridgeline for adjusting my tarp. I also use soft shackles on my UQ plus I use them for hanging stuff off of my hammock ridgeline.

Continuous loops... I use one for a prusik on my hammock ridgeline for pulling myself upright. I use them for the hammock suspension (like replacing ENO DN stock cord) and on my TurtleDog stand for hanging the ridge pole. Lots of uses and handy to have some spares for "whatever"

I know that hppyfngy loves his dogbones... I haven't made any yet but I'm planning to the next time that I get in the splicing/ropework zone.

I use CLs on my tarp ridgeline (klemheist, not prussik) and use SSs on my tarp to connect it to the ridgeline. Quick, easy, and light.

And dogbones rock.
