I use those lines just to pull the tarp sides out and make more room.
Doesnt your pole mod do that?
I guess I am asking: Cant you just use the poles w/o the guy lines?
yep you can absolutely just use the pole...it was just windy that day and the wind was pushing one side in a bit

Yeah I got my tent poles from a couple dead tents my father had lying around. I was planning on trying to make a hammock out of the rip stop from the tents but once deconstructed there wasn't really enough. Made a ton of draw string bags instead. Dicks sporting goods sell replacement poles for dome tents. Think they r around 10.

Clever idea! I am wondering if the pipes really do much since you have tie outs there. What does it look like without the tie outs on the pipe anchor points on the tarp?

I doesn't pull out as well unless you use a hiking pole to leverage the pull higher with the ropes. Otherwise the ropes pull down and don't provide the same amount of interior space.

OK...I messed around with the Winter Dream pole mod some more. I didn't like having to use hardware to hold my poles, so I went with clove hitches and I must say I was very impressed. My thinking was that most of the force on the know will be lateral to the poles, and they held really well. I would like to reiterate that I love the pole mod because it not only pulls the fly out but it pulls it UP as well, providing a lot of head and side space in the tarp.

I am amazed at how light the poles are! I plan to cut them into thirds and use couplings. I am also planning a pole pocket in the middle on both sides so that I can do a single interior center pole mod and see how it turns out.

Re: Cheap pole mod for DIY Winter Dream tarp

Would also work if you drilled a small hole in the cpvc and then use a nacrabiner out of ZingIt or something like that... Just an idea...

I had thought about that, as well as putting a groove in the end of the pole. However, I don't want to weaken the poles any more than necessary and also was looking for a non-hardware method of attachment (although I love the nacrabiner!).

I look at a nacrabiner as "software"... No damage to tarp when you stuff it in the same sack... And no weight penalty so what's to worry...
