Cheap pole mod for DIY Winter Dream tarp

    Hey everybody,

I was inspired by some of the posts about using a pole to tension the tie-outs on the bigger tarps, so I went by Lowe's and picked up a 10 foot section of the 1/2" CPVC pipe. I cut it in half, and used it to tension my DIY tarp. Just because I had them laying around, I used S-biners to attach the poles to the tarp. I plan to cut each pole into thirds, and use couplers to attach them for use on the tarp. I was really pleased with how this worked. The first night I did not use the tie-outs with rope, but the second night was very windy and I added the line on the tie-outs (although it seemed to be working well without the tie-outs, I didn't want to have to get up in the middle of the night if it became a problem). I like this mod because it is very, and very cheap. They tension very well, but not too much, and the pipe seems to handle the stress well.
I know people have been doing this with arrow shafts and with tent poles and such...I haven't seen it with CPVC yet and wanted to give it a try.

BTW the CPVC is the yellowish colored stuff as opposed to bright white schedule 40. I wanted to mention this because my pipes look white in the pics but are actually yellow.

p.s. if you look closely you can see the 30.06 shells I use in my marlinspike hitch. I am very proud of those.

NICE! Who doesn't love some pvc? This is a nice cheap way to experiment with pole mods. Thanks for sharing.

thanks! I was trying to stay away from grommets. I think any s-biner would work...I just happened to have these heavy ones laying around.

So do you think you could fashion decent hiking poles out of that pvc with rubber feet and handles? That way you could use them for porch mode also?

nope...I don't think that is possible with these. I spent 30 minutes in Lowes playing with the different PVC pipes and finally settled on the CPVC due to the flexibility. the schedule 40 PVC would be better for hiking poles but lacks the flexibility and is more brittle. I did notice that the CPVC fits well inside the thin walled schedule 40 but didn't explore that idea any further. so short answer is no because the CPVC is too flexible for hiking poles.

however...I am experimenting with a modified porch mode using these sections. I will get pics on here soon but you are welcome to beat me to it. I am using both sections connected together as an arch to hold up one side.
