    Store bought hammock stand question

I found a regular back yard hammock stand on Craig's list for$30. Will that work for our typical camping hammock? It's 15 feet wide.

It depends on the height I would say. At 15 feet you probably need to be at least 6 feet high for a 30 degree angle with a 110 inch ridgeline.
Don't have much experience with stands though so maybe someone has a better idea!

I recently switched to sleeping in a hammock full time at home and spent a lot of time searching for stands since I live in a (very old) rental house and walls are all plaster. Most of the backyard stands are designed for the crappy rope-style spreader bar hammocks. Here is what I use. Mind you, I sleep in a Brazilian hammock, but I've strung my gathered end hammocks on it as well. It mitigates the needed height by hooking it down the outside of the poles. It's not the prettiest solution and I wish the sitting height was a bit higher, but short of getting some more EM conduit and making extensions, it's the best I'll be able to get.

If it's the 15' one that wal-mart sell's, yes it will work, but setting will be LOW.

I have one of those stands and had the uprights bent a little to shorten the distance between them, but ultimately raise my connection points. Works like a dream. Any muffler shop or someone with a pipe bender should be able to help you out. I"ll post pics as soon as I can find them

Anyway, what I did was take the ends down to my father in laws shop, and asked him to put 2 bends, each 10 degrees, in the pieces, with about a foot between the bends. It worked perfectly! The stand is high enough off the ground, and still has enough space for the hammock to hang between the ends.

    Hope this helps

Jon - After you put the bends in it (two on each "arm") how far apart were the end points. That is, they were 15 ft apart, what is the distance and height after the modification? Also can I assume you took the length of the arm, measured to the center point along the length, then marked it 6 inches either side of that center - to put the bends 1 foot apart and apparently in the middle of the arm?

I'd like to use something like this and I'm sure it would work for my gathered end hammocks. But the Bridge Hammock needs more distance - say something like 13 ft. plus some inches.

The person that had a muffler shop bend some poles as extensions looked solid! I sure wish some vendor would start making those for sale to fit these affordable stands which are available everywhere.

Yep you are correct, 6 inches off center in either direction with a 10 degree bend. I"ll have to go measure the height and distance but it works with gathered end and bridge hammocks.
