    Lightbulb Giant snakeskin

I was thinking of ways to make my packload smaller so i could get a smaller pack, and as i was doing this, i was stuffing my hammock into my pack, and i thought: "hey, why not make a giant snakeskin big enough to hold my quilt, sleeping bag, tarp, and hammock, but not just that, compress it, so that, while taking years off of my packing time, it makes it smaller, and therefore, i can have a smaller pack. So how large would it have to be, how much will it weigh, and what material should it be made of?

I don't use snake skins for my hammock nor UQ or TQ, only my tarps. I find putting my UQ and TQ into a compression stuff sack much easier. Hammock doesn't take up much space at all in my pack so I don't throw that is a compression sack either.

I saw the lazy slug, but I don't want to pay 40 bucks for it. What dimensions should I look at for diy-ing one for netting

the Lazy Slug Tube is the bomb. makes setup and take down really quick.
it will not make the load size smaller, in fact, the best you can hope for is equivalent to the volume you have with the individually stuffed gear.
the biggest advantages of the LST are:
...sil nylon to protect quilts from ground contact during setup/take down.
...the speed of packing and set up (perpetually in low light).
...the storage area that they provide when hammock is deployed.
i have a LST for each of my hammocks. for me, they're well worth it.

I learned a trick a while back from Hawkeye.
Eliminate most of the stuff sacks. Individual sacks actually use the space poorly and leave small gaps between each bag.
Start with your basic thick plastic trash bag (sometime called contractor or compactor bags) inside your backpack. Stuff your quilts in first. Then my clothes are in one bag to keep them organized, but the bag is roomy enough so the clothes can fill any voids. Then anything that needs to stay dry, hammock, food etc., twist the bag down and close it, smooshing out the air. Then dump in the rest of your gear.

Try it. it really does take up less room in the pack to fill every square inch of space.

Tarp goes on top where it handy. A couple of trail snacks for easy access. Water bottle hangs up front on the shoulder strap. Maybe a light jacket or rain coat up top for easy grabbin'.

Then use your compression straps on your back pack to compress the load. A backpack is essentially a giant stuff sack.

I use quart ziplock bags for anything I need to keep together, (med kit, fire stuff, camera, phone, food, etc) and these get placed in a gallon size bag. Sometimes food is a seperate gallon bag, a fellers gotta eat.

I can see what Im looking for and grab it quick, without trying to remember if it was in the blue bag, the red bag, the black bag, or the orange bag, or the green bag.. So I really need a clothes bag and my ziplock, oh and my toilet paper
Zippies keep stuff fairly dry, easy to find and are cheap to replace if needed.

Its Silnylon not netting, keeps the down safe and makes setup a breeze

What happens when you have to pack up wet? How to you keep any water on the tarp from affecting the hamock/insulation?
