$1 yard now $1.50 yard

I was in my local Walmart last week picking up a few things and decided to stop by the fabric department(not that I need anything). I noticed all the $1 fabric was now $1.50.

Has anyone else noticed this?

yeppers.... I noticed a week or so back.

better a 50% rise in cost than the closing of the department... but it does send sticker shock through the system.

$1.50! I was in my local one last week and noticed a big roll of the light gray 1.9 ripstop for $1 yd. I better get it before they raise the price.

I noticed that too. $1.50 seems expensive, doesn't it. Maybe we're just spoiled.

I've always been amazed they sell it for $1 per yard and measure/cut it by the yard with no minimum amount. There is a lot of handling in all that. I think somewhere they have it placed on 20 yard bolts, package, ship, stock and then measure/cut? I would have figured they would sell it in full bolts of so many yards at discount prices to make it worth doing. Some of the places I have bought smallish quantities fabric at discount prices wanted $5 or so per cut and that didn't seem unreasonable.

One possible explanation is that many retailers, who have had to place their orders for the upcoming Christmas season many months in advance, will be compelled by current economic conditions to reduce the prices on many higher-ticket items in order to get them out of the store this season. That means that they will be raising the prices on other items where they see the opportunity. I suspect Wal-Mart gets that discount fabric for next to nothing...it may very well be a perk that's tied to their purchases of other items from a supplier that has the fabric and depends on Wal-Mart's business. Wal-Mart has gotten big, as have other retailers like Lowes, etc., that they can dictate the price and terms opon which they will do business with a supplier. One of these days, if not already, we'll regret allowing the Wal-Marts, etc to get so big at the expense of the small, independent retailers. Some of you that may be on the inside of big-time retail may know a different story, but, for me, I'll drive a little further, pay a little more, and feel a little better about supporting my local merchants and community members that, in turn, support me.

The bargain bin fabric from Wally world is waste. I have found bolts which are only about 20" wide with a zig-zag "selvage" edge to them. The manufacturer obviously slit the fabric down the middle in the cutting. It makes sense for the manufacturer to sell the waste material to Wal-Mart for pennies a ton so they don't have to pay the trash collection and refuse disposal costs incurred. It's a good deal for everyone including the consumer. Wal-Mart gets waste or damged fabric at a cheap price, the fabric stays out of the landfill, we get some specialty fabric for our own fun and pleasure.

I noticed it as well. This sure beats the stock market as I have approx. 2500 yds. stockpiled.

I'm not really that nuts, just a scoutmaster working diligently on crossing my troop over to hammocks.
