Trees NOT having any branches....is a sure sign of caution! Overall visual inspection for dead branches and loose bark on the trunk are also things to watch for. Winter-without the leaves on can make those inspcetions more challenging.
no major close calls here, had a tree fall bout 100 yards away from me but thats about it.
Thank you Spaceweaseal

Closet I ever came was recently a big limb fell closeby. No so close a call though really
Like Hickory has said, "it only hurts if you live"
I have been on many pathes by foot as well as bike watching the branches fall with big thuds, but not at night.
Other than that, Just look up and if you set up at night, look up from different angles with your light to make sure you get that pesky smaller dead branch behind the larger ones...
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
Sandy broke a tree, adjacent to where I hang in the yard, about ten feet up and now it is stuck in one of the trees I tie to. Hmmmmm, pretty good girth at about 18" and seemingly healthy. Know more when I see the core. Neither the hammock nor I were there as it was drying in the basement after a weekend out. And I was not interested in testing Sandy's mettle with soft tissue.
Now I have to figure out how to cut it down and which way it is going to kick. Hmmm, I was studying it. More contemplation required. I would agree a 1600# rated ridgeline would have been slim defense for a tree like this.
I'd have to agree that when the ticket taker asks for yours, it is time. But there is no need to push common sense aside. Look up first. And now I will look sideways too!
If it moves, you can eat it. No promises you will think it tastes good.
