Not a bad idea grannypat. I guess I do that too.

Look, look again and use a ridge line on the hammock and then a continuous ridge line on your tarp

This thread makes me reconsider single line suspension and my thought that amsteel is overkill for ridgelines. And your comment definitely is worthy of consideration.

I believe Fronkey was hit by a tree just hiking on the SHT, and Shug and a buddy had a run in with a tree at a SHT campsite.

It does happen. Pay attention out there.

Good idea dirtwheels, I didn't really think of the ridgeline as a protection function. Amsteel could soften the blow at least. Thanks.

I have to say, I never spent anywhere NEAR the time looking up when I was a ground dweller. I slept great without any worries pitching a tent between the trees. But ever since I started hanging between the trees I worry more about what might fall on me....

I say don't worry. Afterall if one does get you, you won't feel a thing.

Fit happens. I'd rather die doing what I like than live a hundred years in fear of the fit that happens.

Grinder might remember this: Set up near Iron Bridge shelter on the FT I noticed a tent pitched UNDER a tree leaning at 45 degrees right above the ridgeline of the tent, hanging by the branches of other trees. I pointed it out to the guy, and he said he wasnt worried, about it. I tried to talk him into moving, or at least pushing the tree the rest of the way down...he got annoyed so I shut up. I worried about him all night, but there was no wind. Tree was about 8" diameter dead pine.

As an EMT, I once went on a call where a large tree (over 100 years old) fell across a road, crushing a car that was innocently driving by. It was a very difficult scene to work, but trees definitely fall whenever they are good and ready (this wasn't a storm, just a random act). When your time has come, ready or not...there it is!
