Newbie hammocker at REI Garage sale Dallas

Wow the line is all around the buildimg. We will need to really know what to look for. We already bought ENO DN and SN. I guess we need to look at underslings. We need sleeping bags but don't know what kinds are best. M aybe we or Bob needs an under pad. We are slowly building gear and experience for an AT thru hike. Next stop Texas hanging at Fairfield. We should learn a lot there. Trying to learn here but everyone speaks in abbreviations. Took me awhile to know that DNA stood for double nest for instance. Someone needs to sticky a key for newbies. Anyway, any advise is appreciated. I should give Bob and I the nickname Wanna Bees until the trail gives us different name ..maybe hiker bees.

My advise is to hold off on the sleeping bags. For hammock camping you will, if your like me, want to go with top quilt (tq) and under quilt (uq). A sleeping bag works for a top quilt and I use it because I have it, but if I could trade it for a tq I would.
While your there I'd get, I had to order mine, a Kelty Noahs tarp, 12x12, a water filter, head lamps, and tent stakes (msr groundhogs). Have fun.

Beverly, I'll have extra tarps (flys) at hang in tx, a super fly and a kelty, with line etc, also gear to stay warm, as i'm sure others will, so be judicious in what u acquire until u know what works for you, plus gear to buy @ the hang, will also have a couple extra hammocks to use if u wish, just to get a different feel, a wbbb and couple others, but enjoy the sale . Look forward to meeting you both, jim

    Acronyms

If you run into anymore puzzling acronyms this thread is extremely helpful:

I'm constantly running into jumbles of letters that make no sense to me, but more often than not it's just Internet text slang that's confusing me (LMAO? ROTFL? IMHO? YMMV?--save me google!!!)
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Beverly, another thing about sleeping "Bags", they're ok or car camping, but if you're gearing up for an AT hike, or just backpacking in general, forget bags, they're too big/bulky and too heavy. Save yourself a lot of time and money and be lightweight conscious NOW.

Thank you. We could not only use your tarps but lots of advise. We have read here and watched shrugs videos so that has helped. We purchased a down duvet at a thrift store thinking we might be able to divide it and make a couple of underquilts with it. What do you think? I know I could not get them done before the Texas hang however so we will have to make do somehow.

Beverly, Don't worry to much about getting the diy TQ made b4 hang unless time permits, you'll get plenty of ideas and advise, I'll have extra gear as will others, the tarps will cover two hammocks if u choose close together or separate tarps if you prefer, the super fly has detachable doors and the kelt can be set with closed ends. I'll have warmth creating gear, so just saying, come and enjoy and you'll see and get a lot of good ideas. jim
