There are no trees to hang AND it’s raining… what do you do while staying ultralight?

Okay, let’s suppose you are in a worst case scenario. It’s raining and there’s no place to hang. What’s the lightest gear that you would wish you could have in that situation?

Now I will be packing a short Z-lite Sol, a pillow, a thunderfly tarp, and trekking poles. I will also have a Packa and a rain kilt. My only concern is how to keep my down top quilt and pillow clean and dry in this scenario. Any ideas? Would a bathtub style ground sheet be necessary? Even if it’s not raining, but no spot to hang, I wouldn’t want to get my quilt too dirty, so I’m trying to prepare for this.

    Bathtub Groundsheet (Solo-Plus - 3.5 oz)?

You are just tarp camping at this point.

What do ultralite tarp campers use?

    Good question though.

I would be wondering how and why I went someplace without trees.

Ya, I was thinking of getting one of those, just looking at alternatives first. Preferably things that are multipurpose.

I'm going home at that point =)

But seriously, set up and stake out your tarp up with your hiking poles first, preferably out of standing/running water. Get out your groundsheet and spread it under the tarp, and start laying out your gear. Suck it up and understand it will be a miserable night. I don't know of a whole lot of other options.

Site selection would be important, hopefully you could get by without the bathtub ground sheet. Who carries one of those?

Talk about a nightmarish scenario. I'd hike in the rain till I found some trees, even if it were dark if I had to, I think. If you're bringing a hammock, you're expecting to use it right?

    I did a video covering a similar scenario... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymMOVJIpcao

    I'm with Paul.
You kick yourself for being such a bad trip planner. Google earth is your friend. If you are hammock camping you need to know there will be trees.

I would think if you carry a ground sheet of any description thats large enough you could place pine cones, rock,or limbs around the perimeter to form a bath tub effect and then zip up inside the hammock with bugnet to keep the spiders off.

I ditched my groundsheet for a SLD gear sling. My pack and non smellables go in it zipped up tight and off the ground at night.

If you are getting a pack liner couldn't you forgo the gear sling?

After pitching the tarp on the ground in my backyard, the skill seemed mastered. When the scenario you described actually happened, I was surprised how slow and clumsy everything went down. My plan practice, practice, practice to master this skill.
