Bear kegs are great...but I did read somewhere that somewhere in the US a bear has mastered opening the keg...

There is a bear in the Marcy Dam area of the Adirondacks in upstate New York that has learned to open BearVault food containers. BearVaults are approved for use everywhere except the area encompassing the Lake Colden/Marcy Dam corridor and the Johns Brook valley in the Adirondacks.
When asked why I sleep with my shoes on? I don't need to out run a bear, just need to out run my camp mates.

Just wondering, why weren't the food bags tied PCT style instead of just in packs tied to a tree the bear had no trouble grabbing?

Wow, I did a solo overnighter in Panthertown a little under a week ago and I could have sworn I head something going for my food bag but it was late and cold and I hung my food bag a good distance away so I didnt go to investigate. It was still there in the morning so I just chalked it up to paranoia, but now I'm starting to wonder.

The food bags were hung properly or were suppose to be. The pack tied to the tree was a backpack, the bear was just sniffing at it.

That was a good site, about a quarter of the size of the one where we were.

Better yet is a beer keg. Keeps both the bear AND the camper happy.

That's interesting about the BearVault, but I cant see a bear ever opening a bear keg. Unless the bear is carrying around spare change for a phone call or a straight edge

===> Absolutely correct! In fact, it happened to one of the members here - Fred Jones - and they refunded his money for the Bear Vault. It was one one old sow who learned to use her canines, and taught her cubs. After hearing Fred tell the story, I bought myself a Garcia bear Canister. No bear is going to open that! It may be a little bulky, but I feel much safer using it in true bear Country. Putting some reflective tape around it so I can find it if they bat it around a bit at night. Worth every penny, and every ounce.

I saw the following on the US Forest Service site (posted Oct 29):
Bear Encounters Reported in Panthertown Valley
JACKSON COUNTY, N.C. -- The U.S. Forest Service is discouraging people from backcountry camping and from bringing food into the Panthertown Valley area of the Nantahala Ranger District, Nantahala National Forest, following several bear encounters. The area is northeast of Cashiers, N.C.
If the visitors choose to camp in the Panthertown area, they should camp in areas that are used infrequently.
Three separate incidences of bear encounters occurred recently that involved damaged tents and stolen food. Some of the food was properly hung in trees. No injuries were reported. The incidents occurred in the vicinity of the Mac's Gap, Green Valley and the Little Green Mountain area.
Campers are encouraged to prevent bear interactions by taking the following steps:
Do not store food in tents.
Properly store food by hanging it in a tree or in another secure container.
Clean up food or garbage around fire rings, grills or other areas of your campsite.
    Do not leave food unattended.
