Welcome from Rockford, O wait
Saw Rockford, and thought this was my post! Well I have gear I can let you lone, not much as I'm expanding but yea. Hopped on the bandwagon a month of 2 ago and I don't think I will be going back!
Welcome from Central. PA!
This is my first post too....I guess I should do an intro thread rather than responding to yours. But oh well
I'd second that about taking small kids car camping first. One way to ruin a kid for life is to take them out on uncomforatable camping trips for their first trips.
Welcome to HF from Mass.
First off welcome! I do not have any kids myself, but have taken it upon myself to get all of my nieces and nephews In the great out doors. I have never taken them car camping, Always backpacking. They all love it. A couple of tips for you and hiking with kids... go to a p,ace you have already scouted out. A great place right here in Michigan is Nordhouse Dunes. Little ones can always find something to do in the sand and they love the sand dunes. Take them on practice hikes on local trails in city parks and what not. On your practice hikes go the same distance you plan on going on your backpacking trip. Talk to them lots about what backpacking is. When you go on the actual trip plan it for July or August, those are the best months in Michigan as far as weather and warmth. Have everyone carry a backpack. I have the little ones carry a school backpack. Don't load them up with gear, just something like a stuffed animal if they are small. The youngest I have taken was three and he is great, I have some friends that have been taking their boys since they were 6 months old. When you hike with kids, you can't be ultra lite. You need to make sure they are comfortable. You can get light gear and stuff but you need to keep in mind that when they are small you will be thuer pack mule. But also if you start them out young, they will become excited about carrying stuff. On my last trip with the kiddos my five year old nephew was quite upset when he couldn't carry his own sleeping bag because his big sister was carrying hers. So anyway take your kids backpacking! Just plan it well! And if you want more tips pm me. Also every August I take my nieces and nephews ( there are five of them ranging from age 5 to 15) on a trip to nordhouse We meet up with several other families who all bring their kids. You are welcome to join us if you think seeing how either families do it will help. We are mainly tenters on these trips but I usually bring some hammocks to lounge in. Send me a pm if you're interested in joining us. We are taking a least one newbie family next year so you won't be alone. Also I live in GrandRapids to far from you!
That should be not to far from you!
A big hello from the state of Oklahoma. My partner and I also have experience taking the nieces and nephews camping. Haven't gotten them into the hiking portion yet, but we have done our fair share of car camping with them. This spring we got our oldest niece a hammock. She did great. We just picked up an inexpensive ($20) gathered end hammock from one of our local sports stores. I think we may even have our nephews interested in their own hammocks. Welcome to the trees!
