So when did the forums go online. Was there any one person that actually set it up? Who is the brainchild behind it? Was it a spinoff of WB? Inquiring minds want to know. Anyone have answers?

John, I thought I read the other day that there was a yahoo group first.?
There was a hammock group on yahoo. I believe it was run by Ed Speer and his wife. They announced that it would be retired about a year ago. At least this is my vague memory at work. Others can correct me where I've erred.

WOW, six years! Seems like just yesterday. And there were so few of us back then, now,,, well WOW again!
Even with so few, we had overwhelmed the "Hammocks" forum on White Blaze in pretty short order. With so many "How to" & "What if" type questions & new techniques & gear being developed at a mind blowing pace. Then the hangouts started in earnest, and BOOM!
In pretty short order we hammock users had made it into hiking history with Victoria Logue referring to us hangers as having "quite the cult following" in TWO of her latest books.

I was on the yahoogroups before I found hf. Then I never went back to the yahoogroup. I had heard it ended.

- it's a community hammock history timeline. Feel free to edit.
I believe the real craze for camping hammocks, though started by Clark was inflamed by Hennessy*, the community, with it's DIY sensibilities, friendliness and helpfulness was started by folks like Ed Speer. This was the beginnings of the yahoo group (2001?). Around the same time Whiteblaze opened a hammock sub forum. (2002) Ed Speer, I think, started out the 'group hang' concept. Before Dejoha's amazing "Ultimate Hang", THE hammock book was "Hammock Camping" by Ed Speer. The yahoo group was part of that, but run by a slightly different group of folk to the forum here. Other websites to check out are imrisk.com (slightly old now, but still a really good resource for how things were done, which are still valid ways) and SGT Rock's website.
* (this was, as I recall, about the time that I started researching Ultralight stuff, and HH kind of jumped on the light, LNT bandwagon and took off among the back packing community.) (I started 03/04 getting into it, HH is 02 so I kind of saw this at THE BEGINNING (thunder) lol)
