Eva Foam at BigLots

Ok, so just did a bit of math and the Gossamer Gear 1/4" Thinlight pad is a lighter material coming in at 5.11-7.5 oz/sqyd based on their weight variance. The Big Lots EVA Antifatigue floor mats comes in at 14.55 oz/sqyd. So the GG Thinlight pad is lighter weight.

For comparison, the Walmart blue CCF pad comes in at 0.09oz/sqyd.

The one advantage I see thus far with the Big Lots pad, besides price, is that you can cut it to include shoulder and thigh wings which the SPE is designed to add. As far as price goes, you can get two 23x96 full length pads or three 33x48 torso pads out of it for less than $20. Not a bad deal if you ask me. I've not tried laying on it in the hammock outside yet, although if I get the urge I may setup outside tonight and enjoy the frosty 30s.

Whoops! Got my math backwards. The Walmart pad is 10.7oz/sqyd. Thanks for catching me on that one.

Just cut myself a 39"x59" section to match the GG 1/4" Thinlight pad the weight came in at 24.125 oz. Certainly not as lightweight, now off to the backyard to tray and wrestle this behemoth into the hammock and test out the warmth capabilities. If you don't hear from me, I may need time to thaw.

Well looks as if the pad is good to 40°. At least that is what I'm saying. Just came in from a bit of CBS (not sure how that happened with a pad) and it is currently 40° with a wind chill of 35°. So the pad worked, although not all that great. You could possibly get a better temp rating from it on the ground as it seems to be a bit airy. No condensation build up whatsoever, and I'm a sweat factory most of the time. Otherwise it was like using a pad in a hammock. A bit of wrestling at first followed by a bit of longing for my down UQ. I may look at cutting a smaller bit to use as a foot pad and replace my self inflating sit pad since I have the roll.

Overall, I can't really recommend the use of this as a primary warmth system due to the weight and bulk. I'd say save your pennies for a few more weeks and instead get the Gossamer Gear 1/4" Thinlight if you're going the pad route, otherwise don't bother with pads at all and go straight for the UQ.
