Seems everyone here is using toggles that have a relatively small diameter or cross section. When I made my toggles, I looked around the shop and used what I had available - Hence, mine are cut from 1/2" EMT conduit, each about 3" long.

Here's my logic: A larger diameter toggle means the webbing (which is flat & wide) doesn't have to scrunch up as much to form a knot when it tightens around the toggle, thus spreading the load out more. This, in conjunction with the strength gained in doubling the diameter of the toggle, means far more load bearing capacity without fear of the toggle crushing or folding. Sure I suppose you could argue the weight difference of the toggles, but two 3" pcs of conduit aren't gonna send my pack load into the stratosphere. If I were a Gram-Weenie, I'd splurge for a titanium spork, rather than try to cut weight by lightening a key piece of my suspension . . .

    Just my $.02

In the BWCA this past sept I used a small 3/8 in twig I found on the ground. It broke easily with one hand. Put the whoopie on the knot and did not have any issues. Make sure the knot is tight on the toggle. If the knot is loose the webbing may slip and whoopie could hit the toggle. Had this happen to me once and the ground came up and hit me

    It's a hammock not a trampoline.

Do you also test drive cars by running them into trees?

Hammocks are made to hold relatively static loads. Jumping into one is just asking for a sore butt, IMHO. Load it and then bounce around if you want to test it...

Your whoopies may very well have jumped the knot when you did your test.

You should see the grown dwellers eyes light up when I hang from 1 tree
After my intimate meeting with the bugs below, I set up again, thought to myself how the other side would manage and saw myself in slow motion, ala Shug replay, as the 2nd half of the bug meeting would soon come to order.

Ive hit a couple trees in my day. I think your right though. I think it jumped the knot. This morning I found the toggle. It flew over my two story house pass my driveway into the street. About 250 ft. And its crushed in half. I wish it would have broke my second story window. That would have been funny.
I didn't sail here to sleep on the ground.

So, you mean that your hammock doubles as a crossbow? That's amazing!

That's impressive!!! Good thing it didn't hit you, that probably would have left a mark If we need any destructive testing done now we know how to send it to

That's an impressive distance. You're going to be required by the ATF to register your UQ!
