I am no expert with animation but I did figure out how to do what I wanted...
I got a free, open source screen recording program that I used.
I took a print screen off of google maps--the terrain view--- of the first portion of my hike (I think it was from Comers Creek to Old Orchard shelter). I then pasted my picture into Photoshop (or whatever photo editing software you have). Once in Photoshop, I just recorded myself drawing a line on the trail. It kind of sucked and it took some trial and error getting the video to to be smooth enough but it worked out great. In the end I just traced it REALLY slow and then sped it up in post production when I stuck it into Vegas Video. Pretty low tech approach but I will be doing more of it so I should get better at it.
The screen recording software I used is located here
Sorry it wasn't the simple flash based program you were looking for Turk but it worked for me. I can see a few other uses for it as well...
Good call on giving thanks to the wife too Shug. She is a trooper! When I leave for a trip, she is stuck at home with all 4 kids...AND we home school
AND we have a new born! She will be coming with me to Mt Rogers though. I wonder if she is going to be the only girl there?

P.S. Great job on your latest video Turk!
hey good time just the same!
I might have to try that out.
I am still jealous. I hear all good things about Vegas editing.
I just have to find a good editing program that is stable in 64bit vista
especially when you have 4-5 gigs of video open simultaneously sucking
back RAM.
Its been a unicorn hunt for sure

Yeah, i got a new laptop a couple of years ago that had Vista on it. It stayed on there for about 9 days. It was just too buggy and...I dont know...bubbly, for lack of a better word. It just seemed to slow everything down for me so I wiped the hard drive (yes, voiding the warrenty) and installed XP on it.
I have never looked back since. The laptop runs faster and in my opinion is much more stable and less buggy. Probably not as good as a Mac, which I hear is the thing to have if you want to do much editing, but I just can not take the plunge into "apple land".
Vegas Video 8 is pretty easy to work with and there are numerous tutorials out there you youtube for figuring things out. If you are used to NLE programs it should be pretty intuitive.
I have an AMD Turion dual core (1.8mhz which I think is like a 3800+ but I cant remember) I have 2g of RAM and a 160g hard drive. It is the HP Pavilion dv2000 series. Nothing to write home about that is for sure but it seems to do ok
Adam
great vids thanks againneo
the matrix has you
Ahhh... Mt Rogers Area!!! One of my favorites!!! Thanks Stormcrow. I enjoyed the hike.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
Great video - Can't wait to see that shelter again in Jan - I've actually never seen it w/o snow! It's a good shelter for hanging in, though. And NastyFinger should be your new trail name...I laughed out loud at that!
I know at least one other girl coming so Jenny won't be all alone.
And I just ordered a StickPic...good find, MrPrez!

sorry that the video doesn't exist...I'm planning to make videos at home and would like to get some ideas from your videos. Do you create your own video at home? What video making software do you use?
