Go with the cuben. As others have said, both are great. But if money isn't as much of a concern and as you live in Texas, the HG would be my choice.

As far as durability - if you treat it right, cuben will be plenty strong. I have seen it get some abrasion tears under heavy use, though, so it isn't quite as tough as silnylon.

For scouts or younger folks, silnylon is a more resilient choice. For adults that generally are easier on gear, cuben fiber is plenty durable. Go with the HG version that and don't look back. Your back and legs will thank you in the long run.

I own both and love them both.

If weight is a factor then go with the Cubin and the HG Winter Palace 12ft ridgeline weights a whooping 8 oz.

If weight is not a factor then go with the Big Mama Jama which weights about 15 oz
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

I've been continuing my research quite a bit and I'm pretty sure it's going to be the cuben. It's a bit more money but I'd rather spent it now and go cuben then spend even more later because I upgraded again and then have 3 tarps 2 of which I wouldn't use much. Thank for all the advice and tips.

I just purchased my HG4S and I'm about to make my guylines quick question. Tensioners or no tensioners? I know it's not necessary but I hat the thought that that bit of give might be good in high winds. Any thoughts?

Nawh ... no tensioners needed but if you use the pull outs on the sides ... might want to use some bungee there. But I really don't see a need for tensioners myself.
