Question Cord management: how do you keep things from tangling?

Howdy all! I would appreciate feedback on how you keep all of your lines from getting tangled. What do you do to help keep guy lines and excess ridge line from turning into large knotted piles of uselessness and frustration?

    Thanks!

I use small hair elastics made for ponytails... (Helps to have daughters.)

Tiny, weigh nothing, multi colors and cheap. Tho some are stronger than others. I can't remember the better of the brands but spotting the better ones is pretty clear.

They're very small, snug fitting on say a pinky finger. Double over once and you're more than set.

I think it's more of what cord you use, not how you store it. I use Z-packs 1.25mm Z-line spectra cord. All I do is leave the lines attatched to the tarp, and shove it all in the stuff sack. Never have problems with tangles.

For shortlengths of line like guylines I just figure eight them around my hand and stuff into the pockets on my HH hex tarp. Longer lines like my bear bag line and tue assorted pieces I carry I use a chain sinnet type braid. Make a loop at the end and start pulling the rope thru making a new loop pull thru and repeat.
Doesnt tangle and simply unravels by pulling the loose end.

I used to have Rats Nests all the time until I bought a tarp with small pockets to stow the guy lines. I also figure eight them prior to stowing them. It does take a little more time when breaking down the tarp but I have not had one tangled line since doing it that way.

If you don't have the pockets you can still just figure eight them but I find it's not quite as secure that way. That's what I do with my ridge lines because there are no pockets for them. My tarp with pockets is a Big Daddy by Wilderness Logics. Love the pockets!

BTW...the figure eight is the real trick to not having tangles. I usually figure eight my lines using my pinky finger and thumb. With the last eight inches or so I take about three wraps around the bundle....pass the tail under one of the wraps and cinch it up. It'll usually stay secure in my stuff sack even if I don't have pockets.

A quick figure eight on your fingers works wonders. Put your thumb and pinkie out and figure eight around them. With a few inches left, hank the rope like in this diagram. (specifically, steps 17-21)

It looks a little complicated until you practice it a couple of times. I am now really fast at it and do it for all of my lines. I even do it with the extra part of the whoopie slings, so it isn't hanging down in my way. No tangles.

I especially like the way they cinch it at the end. My method is not as secure although it does usually hold. Making that little loop at the end is key. Thanks for sharing it.

I'm with falkniven, I use lash-it and dynaglide. They pretty much untagle with a good shake.
