How big is your "welcome mat?"

In another thread it was discussed that a "welcome mat" under your hammock can help with moisture coming from the ground up to your hammock.

My question is how big a ground cloth do you use? And what weight? I assume Tyvek would be a great option as it's light weight and water tight, but how do you keep it from blowing away? Rocks at the corners?

    Thanks in advance

I use either polycro or tyvek. Size I cut it large enough to keep the dog out of the mud and I also considered my pack length and width. I also when going Light will use my rain kilt. Some times the dog lays on it and a pad...sonetimes if its nasty Ill put may pack on it and the pack cover on it too. keeps it there while sleeping.can put you shoes on it too.

I carry a piece of "Tyveck"...not actual tyveck but lumber wrap I get from a friend. It comes off bundles of 2x4s and its free. My peice is large enough to use as a ground sheet under my hammock if I need to go to ground. 2' x 5' ish if I remember right.

I use a piece of polycro about 2' x 3'. I place my bag and all my loose pieces on it and place it all right under my hammock.

I use a piece of Tyvek, that is large enought to be used as a "bathtub" ground sheet if need be. I use a loop of bankline larksheaded onto a "button" for the tieouts (I placed a marbel size wad of dry grass under the tyvek at each corner and push it up to form the button, then loop the line over that lump and cinch it down.) I make some stakes when I get to camp or use the smallest lightest needle stakes, also I almost always have something laying on it to stop it from blowing away.

Hi markrvp, I'm back My welcome mat is about 6' x 3.5' and it stays put because all of my stuff is on it As you get to know me, you'll understand more of that comment. I've been meaning to get some tyvek as it would be a bit lighter, but I use an old poly tarp that I cut into 3 pieces for all of us to use as a ground cloth once we got our "semi real" tarps a year ago. Suppose I'll keep using the poly until it falls apart....or they come out with pink or purple and then I am so going to change that

3' x 4' purchased from an ebay seller before one of our own started carrying tyvek.

It seems like a good size, kinda big but that can be fixed later if I want to.

My shoes, a water bottle and my stove all set up to make coffee from the hammock in the morning seem to hold it down nicely.

Mine is about 3 x5 also. I put my shoes and whatever on it, and if I think its going to rain hard, I flip the uphill end over my shoes so flowing water will run around it, not onto it. Its always on the outside of my backpack for sitting on during breaks.

A 24" x 30" piece of a pet food bag, it's the same material that blue tarps are made of. Well cleaned of food residue by the way.
